December 14, 2022 Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Wang Wenbin presided over a regular press conference
Oriental Satellite TV Reporter: On December 12, European Council issued a document stating that EU is still committed to restoring the complete and effective implementation of the comprehensive agreement, but the Iranian side has not made necessary decisions so far. On the same day, the EU's Senior Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Borrelli said in an interview that in terms of preventing Iraq from developing nuclear weapons, there is no better choice than a comprehensive agreement, and other issues related to Iraq should be dealt with separately from the Iranian nuclear issue. What is China’s comment on this?
Wang Wenbin: We attach importance to the above position stated by the European side on the Iran nuclear issue, and welcome the EU to reiterate its commitment to restoring the comprehensive agreement on the Iran nuclear issue, continue to carry out diplomatic and political efforts, and advocate the separation of the Iran nuclear issue from other Iran-related issues.
At present, the situation of the negotiations on resuming performance of the comprehensive agreement is complex and severe, but there is still hope for reaching an agreement. All parties should adhere to the basic direction of dialogue and negotiation, increase diplomatic efforts, and promote the comprehensive agreement to return to normal as soon as possible. Iran has recently demonstrated goodwill and flexibility on some outstanding negotiation issues. The US should move with Iran to make positive responses and promote the early results of the negotiations. At the same time, other parties should also work together to take positive and constructive measures to create a good atmosphere for negotiations. It should be pointed out that linking the Iranian nuclear issue with other issues and unilaterally strengthening sanctions against Iran will only lead to a dead end in negotiations and even lead to the wasted diplomatic efforts.
China supports the EU to play a more active role in mediation, strive to restart negotiations and reach an agreement as soon as possible. China will also continue to work with all relevant parties to make efforts to promote the political and diplomatic solution to the Iran nuclear issue, maintain the international nuclear non-proliferation system, and maintain peace and stability in the Middle East.
