Just like that, with the strong recommendation of Marshal Ye, Yang Chengwu became the Chief of Staff of the People's Liberation Army of China after Luo Ruiqing.
After that, Marshal Ye added to Vice Chairman of the Military Commission and Secretary-General of the Military Commission. With the support of Chairman Mao and Marshal Lin, Yang Chengwu made the work of the Military Commission vivid. However, with the continued deepening of the Cultural Revolution, Yang Chengwu was unfortunately involved in the whirlpool of struggle and began a marginalized life for six years.
It is worth mentioning that during these six years, unlike other people who frequently encountered various criticisms and long censorship, during his idle living in Luoyang , Qiu Huizuo was responsible for his life, and the treatment of the deputy general staff was still retained in his position. The task force had never disturbed his life. Such a situation was very rare in that special era.
Even Yang Chengwu said in his diary: "During the entire period of detention, no one talked to me once, and no problem was checked..." ("General Yang Chengwu's Self-Report" Liaoning People's Publishing House 1997 edition page 349).
In 1974, with Mao Ye's support, Yang Chengwu returned and served as the first deputy director of the General Staff again. Since then, Ye and Yang have begun to fight side by side again.
At this time, Wang Zhangjiangyao's power had reached its peak. In order to capture the military forces for the future, they began to frequently send "olive branches" to Yang Chengwu.
Yang Chengwu was dealing with Wang Zhangjiang and Yao while reporting Wang Zhangjiang and Yao's actions to Marshal Ye in a timely manner. The principle given by Marshal Ye and others was: do not offend or be close, only listen with "ears" and not with "mouth". The tried and tested Yang Chengwu naturally understood the profound meaning of this.
In September 1976, the great leader Chairman Mao passed away and the situation became extremely complex and subtle. At this critical moment, Yang Chengwu took on the role of the "liaison officer" between Marshal Ye and Marshal Nie, so that Hua Guofeng could obtain support from the army as soon as possible.
Yang Chengwu also understood that the situation was extraordinary at this time, so he presided over the Standing Committee of the Party Committee of the General Staff for two consecutive times, emphasizing to the General Staff:
"Now is a very war-ready period. Any unit or any region, if you use a squad or platoon (without the camp or station), you must be approved by the General Staff; if you use a company, you must report to the Central Military Commission for approval; and you must never perform any tasks other than your duties. This article must be further reiterated and strictly implemented, otherwise it will be subject to military law."
In this way, the General Staff firmly holds the military power in his hands at this special moment.
After preparing all the preliminary plans, Marshal Ye knew that on the eve of the action, the troops would never allow problems, so he found Yang Chengwu again and said:
"You tell Marshal Nie, just say that they have been discussed, please rest assured. The opinions of the vast majority of members of the Political Bureau of the Central Committee have been solicited, and they have also discussed specific action plans and time with Comrade Guofeng and Dongxing. You must always stay in front of the Hongjizi, master the three headquarters, the army, air force and the seaside defense. As long as the army does not have problems, you are not afraid!"
In the secret conversation, Marshal Ye was still worried and asked: How is the troops? Yang Chengwu replied: "Please rest assured by Marshal Ye. The "Gang of Four" could not transfer a platoon, even one soldier."
With Yang Chengwu's statement, Marshal Ye felt much more at ease, so he immediately devoted himself to the plan to secretly arrest Wang Zhang Jiangyao.
In October 1976, after intense planning, Wang Zhangjiang and Yao were arrested one after another, and the "Gang of Four" was destroyed in one fell swoop. Since then, Chinese history has entered a completely different new era.
