The 60-year-old Shi Dongyuan is from Hanbin, Ankang. He has just retired this year and is idle. He usually takes his grandson, swims, and watches TV at home. The desk was filled with stacks of honor certificates and medals, depicting his past.
In 1979, Shi Dongyuan, who had just turned 18, chose to join the army. This young man from Qinba Mountain District, was particularly tenacious. He was named a special slasher for one year after joining the army. He won the first place in the army's equipment drills and assassination drills for two years. He was awarded the third-class merit and became a grassroots backbone in the army who can be both civil and military. The great years should have stayed in the army to serve the country. However, in 1983, Ankang City encountered a severe flood. A group of Ankang soldiers including Dongyuan were honored to be discharged from the army in advance and returned to their hometown to participate in the construction work. Dongyuan was also assigned to work in Ankang City Local Products Company. Around 2005, the Ministry of Commerce implemented the "Ten Thousand Villages and Thousand Townships" market project, sinking into townships and rural areas to participate in the construction of grassroots networks. In his position, Ji Dongyuan started as a salesperson and was rated as an outstanding Communist Party member for many years.
In 2016, the nearly retired Chi Dongyuan chose to join the Hanjiang Volunteer Life Rescue Team to participate in Hanjiang water voluntary rescue and various volunteer services. Shi Dongyuan said: "I can meet a group of swimmers, exercise, and do things for everyone within my ability. I think this kind of life is good." Recalling his experience of saving people, Dongyuan found a photo. The shooting time was 8:2 am on July 23, 2021. In the photo, an old man was curled up on the roof of a colored steel house. Six villagers were also trapped, as well as the cattle and sheep in their house. The flood had already flooded across the beams, and the old man could only curl up. This photo records the first time that Shi Dongyuan participated in a rescue in other places, and the old man in the photo was the first group of people who rushed to rescue.
At noon on July 22, 2021, Ji Dongyuan received a call from Zhou Yunkang, captain of the Hanjiang Volunteer Life Saving Team. He recalled: "At that time, the captain said we were going to Henan to participate in the rescue, and asked me to prepare the logistics work quickly and be ready to set off at any time." After putting down the phone, Ji Dongyuan was full of excitement. He hurriedly contacted the driver and helmsman of the lifesaving team to prepare various lifesaving equipment and daily necessities. At 17 pm that day, Ji Dongyuan followed the captain Zhou Yunkang and the team members Gu Chunxing and Lu Xiaobing in a car and rushed to Xinxiang, Henan.
忿Dongyuan told reporters: "Before leaving that day, I greeted my family and said I was going to Henan. Because I grew up in the water, my family didn't advise me, so I just gave me some advice." Because the incident was rushed, the group did not dare to delay and went straight to the destination. "I was very excited before leaving because we were on behalf of Ankang to support the affected people in Henan. It was quite glorious. However, when we arrived in Xi'an, the rain was getting heavier and heavier, and I was still a little worried. After all, it was our first cross-provincial rescue."
At around 3 a.m. on July 23, Ji Dongyuan and his group rushed to Fengquan District, Xinxiang City, Henan Province. This was the area they were responsible for participating in the rescue, and they were also the first rescue team to arrive at the scene. At 4:24 a.m., a Shaanxi G rescue vehicle parked at a gas station on the side of the road. Ji Dongyuan and his group got out of the car and braved the heavy rain to fill up the search and rescue boats in the night, and then went to the town to connect with the town cadres. Shi Dongyuan recalled: "At that time, because many lines were broken and the phone was sometimes unable to be connected, we almost ran to Jiaozuo on the way. Fortunately, we finally arrived at the station. At about 6 o'clock in the morning, we successfully met with the local town officials. Under his guidance, we started to search and rescue."
Due to floods, communication failures, the first task that Shi Dongyuan and others received was to go to the home of a villager in the local Muye District, and the villagers had not been in contact for a day and night. Under the leadership of the town officer, the group drove the lifeboat slowly forward."Because of the urban terrain and the streets are of different heights, the direction of the water flow is not fixed, and the underwater situation is not like ours. It is very unfamiliar, and there are many floating debris." Ji Dongyuan recalled.
After going through hardships, Dongyuan and his group finally arrived at the villagers' home. At this time, the water level was close to 3 meters. Seven villagers had to curl up on the beams of the colored steel house with their cattle and sheep. One of the old men could only curl up, and the water level had already approached the beams. "When they saw us, they quickly waved their hands and shouted loudly in dialect. We were also very excited when we saw that they were fine." During the on-site rescue, Ji Dongyuan realized that the family had not eaten for a day and a night. Due to the urgent situation, the rescue team could only put life jackets on the villagers and transport them to a safe area. At around 8 o'clock, the seven villagers were successfully transferred, and the first rescue mission was successfully completed.

As of about 17 pm that day, Jidongyuan followed the team to transport more than 100 affected people. At this time, the rain stopped, the sun came out, and more and more rescue forces arrived. "The first day was really tiring, but I think we did it. Not only did we save a lot of people, but we also protected ourselves throughout the process." Due to the heavy consumption of the first day, a large number of rescue teams in the town arrived one after another. Under the persuasion and suggestions of the town cadres, Ji Dongyuan and his group took a rest the next day and prepared to standby.
