According to news from the Southern Theater Command, on November 29, the USS Chanslosville missile cruiser illegally broke into the waters near China's Nansha Islands without the approval of the Chinese government. Our Southern Theater Command organized naval and air forces to track and monitor and warn and expel them.
Afterwards, the US Navy's Seventh Fleet made a quibble with the so-called freedom of navigation. The Southern Theater Command released the scene of our army's ship surveillance on the US Navy's USS Chanthellesville cruiser (CG-62) and refuted it. From the picture, we can see the US ship not far away. The nearest picture shows the officers and soldiers of our ship using telescopes to monitor the US ship. Judging from the searchlight on the left and the cylindrical base on the right, a 052D destroyer from the Southern Theater Command Navy was performing the surveillance mission.
As for why the 052D destroyer was sent instead of the 054A frigate, the main reason is that the 054A frigate may not be able to keep up with the USS Chanthellesville cruiser. The Chanthalesville belongs to the Ticonderoga class cruiser . As an surface ship developed by the US military for the ocean decisive battle during the Cold War, the Ticonderoga class pays great attention to high-speed performance, with a length-to-width ratio of the ship as high as 10.2. It is equipped with 4 LM2500 gas turbines, and its maximum speed is 30 knots. Its maneuverability, especially acceleration performance, is excellent. Our 054A frigate has a maximum speed of only 27 knots, which is easy to not keep up with the US ship.
Close-range monitoring and deportation missions require our ship to always follow the other party without being thrown away by the other party, and can quickly cut into the other party's route when the other party suddenly accelerates or turns sharply to try to break into my country's territorial waters. Therefore, the 052D destroyer with a maximum speed of no less than 30 knots is undoubtedly the most suitable for performing such tasks.
And from the navigation diagram of the US ship given by the Southern Theater Command, we can see that when the USS Chanthalesville sailed to the northwest corner of Yongshu Reef , it suddenly turned sharply and deliberately rushed into the 12 nautical miles of territorial waters of our Yongshu Reef, and was decisively stopped driving away by our ship and aircraft. This fully demonstrates the importance of "selecting ships with similar or even exceeding their mobility according to the intercept object" when tracking and intercepting tasks.
In fact, this is not the first time our army has prevented the US ship from trespassing into our territorial waters of the Nansha Islands. As early as September 30, 2018, the US Decatur destroyer entered the waters of Nanxun Reef and Chigua Reef in our Nansha Islands without authorization. Our army's 052C destroyer Lanzhou ship identified and verified and drove away the US ship. When the US ship did not obey the warning many times, the Lanzhou ship cut into the front of the US ship's route at a high speed. The closest distance between the two ships was only 41 meters, forcing the US ship to change its course and flee in a hurry.
In addition, from the satellite picture on site, we can also see that there is a US military P-8A anti-submarine patrol aircraft in the nearby airspace, which seems to be providing intelligence support for the Chanthalesville (Figure 1 below). The notice of the Southern Theater Command also mentioned that the expulsion operation dispatched air forces. Previously, the photos taken by a reporter from Philippines in our Nansha Islands showed that KJ 500 and other military aircraft were deployed on Yongshu Reef (Figure 2). It is speculated that the military aircraft participating in the expulsion operation included the Air Police-500 deployed on Yongshu Reef, and its main mission should include electronic suppression and interference of the US military's P-8A.
This action of the US military seriously infringes on our country's sovereignty and security, fully exposing the ironclad fact that the United States is the South China Sea peace destroyer. With the virtue of the United States, such an incident will not be the first or the last. In the face of the provocations of the US military, we must not only resolutely fight, but also further strengthen the defense work in the South China Sea.
