In July 1962, in order to better develop the national economy, the state required cadres to return to their hometowns to be farmers. Li Wenxiang was not greedy for the luxurious life in the city at all, and took his wife back to his hometown without saying a word.

Returning to his hometown, although the living conditions of the couple are far from before and are very hard, they have something to do, and there is only one belief in their hearts, which is how to help the elders and fellow villagers get rid of poverty.

Because Li Wenxiang is a soldier, has been on the battlefield, has been a cadre, has a wide knowledge and is willing to help others, he was elected as the village party secretary by villagers. After becoming the village party secretary, he felt that the responsibility on him was heavier.

To get rid of poverty, you must first fill your stomach. To eat full, you must have food, but it is not easy to increase grain output.

Li Wenxiang's hometown has been attacked by natural disasters for many years. saline-alkali land is not conducive to plant growth. The people here live a tight life and often eat it without the next meal.

If the matter is not solved for a day, Li Wenxiang feels uncomfortable and can't sleep all night. He thought day and night, observing the terrain, and understanding the season, and suddenly, a bold idea appeared in his mind, which was to draw water and plant rice.

The village has been dominated by wheat for generations, and the conditions and skills for planting rice are not very suitable. At first, everyone had many questions, but Li Wenxiang did not retreat. Instead, he visited one by one with his firm belief to persuade the villagers.

Through unremitting efforts and without any mechanical help, Li Wenxiang led a "rice-change team" composed of more than a dozen strong men in the village.
