Guo Jianwei, a retired employee of the Tobacco Monopoly Bureau of Renshou County, Meishan City, Sichuan Province, is a well-known "meddler" in the yard. Everyone calls him "Lao Guo."
In August this year, the Renshou County Tobacco Monopoly Bureau organized veterans to carry out an "August 1st" themed symposium. "Lao Guo", as a veteran, participated in the event and shared his story.

During the self-defense counterattack against Vietnam in 1979, "Lao Guo" enlisted in the army and became a soldier. He did not have the opportunity to go to the southern front to participate in the war. Instead, he went to Jilin City and stationed in the eastern section of the Sino-Soviet border, becoming a member of the 81272 field unit. With the special terrain surrounded by mountains on three sides and the extremely cold climate of the icy and snowy mountains, it is common to dig caves, build bunkers, and build observation towers. It is common to suffer from hunger, cold, and sleepless nights. The conditions are extremely difficult. Although the strength of the field troops at that time was no less than that of the southern front, since there was no direct firefight, most of the recruits had not received professional training. Out of caution, spontaneous training was arranged. That day, the logistics team, military horse squad, health team and other logistics departments were practicing throwing grenades. Before this, they did not even have simulation training. Most people completed the first bomb drop with trembling hands. At that time, a female soldier from the health team was about to drop the bomb. She thought that a run-up might be able to increase the distance of the bomb drop, but she was too nervous while running. As soon as her hand slipped, the grenade went out. Seeing that she was standing within the range of the grenade, "Lao Guo" didn't have time to think too much. He stepped forward 2 meters and threw the female soldier to the ground. The grenade exploded half a meter away from them. Fortunately, everyone was under the parabola of the blast point and fell down in time so they were not injured.
Afterwards, "Lao Guo" was awarded the title of "Lei Feng Advanced Element". Full of his original intention of serving the battlefield and serving the country loyally, he wrote a petition for war, bit his finger and stamped it with blood. He also submitted his application for party membership.

After retiring from the army, Guo Jianwei went to work in a sugar and wine company. In work and life, he always adhered to the original intention of a Communist Party member, worked hard and was willing to help others.
Probably around 1990, one weekend afternoon, "Lao Guo" went fishing in the Hongbing Reservoir on the edge of the county seat as usual. Just as he was setting up his fishing rod and waiting for the fish to take the bait, one of the two boys playing nearby accidentally fell into the water. The boy was about eight or nine years old and looked like he couldn't swim. He was struggling in the water and was in a very critical condition. When "Lao Guo" saw this, he jumped into the water without hesitation. Fortunately, the place where he fell into the water was close to the shore. After more than ten minutes of hard work, the two finally landed.
After landing, "Lao Guo" was exhausted. The little boy recovered his breath and quickly thanked him and left.
"Actually, I'm quite scared when I think about it. My swimming ability was average at the time, but fortunately my physical strength was not bad. It would have been very dangerous if I were farther away from the shore. But I never regretted it, because there was no time to hesitate in the situation at that time, so I went to save him out of instinct..." "Lao Guo" recalled.
The yard where "Lao Guo" lives now does not employ a professional property company to manage it. Most of the time, "Lao Guo" is in charge. Just like the head of this big family, he likes to help and speaks with authority. "Lao Guo" brings the owners into a WeChat group, where they discuss all the big and small things in the yard. He knows best which house is leaking and which house is being renovated.
"Although I have retired, I can still take care of the yard, and my retirement life has become very rich, which I think is very meaningful."
In the past few years, he has been even more busy. Organize interest groups to play table tennis; participate in community volunteer services and epidemic prevention and control in the park; clean the yard, water flowers and fertilize... (Contributed by Fu Wanlin, Meishan Tobacco Monopoly Bureau)
