Grandpa Huang Jianhua (first from left) and his comrades
Years have passed and time flies. This old photo retains the glory of more than 70 years ago. In September 1951, my grandfather and several surviving comrades said goodbye to the destroyed GAZ truck and the fallen comrades, returned to Anton (now Dandong City, ) to pick up the new truck, and took advantage of this rare opportunity to drive the new truck to the door of the photo studio Ask a photographer to take photos of them beforehand.
html More than 170 years have passed, and my grandfather would often look at the photos and miss the comrades who shared life and death together. At the beginning of 1951, my grandfather’s unit suddenly received an order from his superiors: all the regiment’s vehicles were handed over on the spot, and the officers and soldiers went north.
Soon, my grandfather’s army added new soldiers and received new GAZ-51 trucks. They were loaded with ammunition and food and drove straight to the front line. Due to air defense needs, camouflage sheds are installed in the cabs of all vehicles, and camouflaged branches are inserted into the fenders. The convoy drove across the Yalu River Bridge in the dark, but it was still unable to avoid the crazy bombings by enemy planes. In less than 100 kilometers, one-third of the cars were blown up, and a quarter of the soldiers were killed or injured.
Later, the transportation convoy adjusted its traveling strategy. The driving team was limited to two vehicles. People and vehicles were separated when camping. No fires were burned during the day and lights were controlled at night. As the anti-aircraft artillery units, especially the young Volunteer Air Force, entered the battle, the number of convoy casualties gradually decreased.
In 1952, the secretary of my grandfather's company was killed in a bombing, and my grandfather was transferred to the company headquarters to take over as the secretary. After the armistice, my grandfather was responsible for finding and sorting out the remains of the martyrs. After cleaning up various records and materials, my grandfather found that since his company entered Korea to fight, more than a hundred soldiers had died or been injured.
Nowadays, my grandfather’s comrades are getting older, and their faces may even become unknown to each other, but their names will always be engraved in each other’s hearts.
It is precisely because of the "steel company " composed of flesh and blood that this "steel transportation line that is indestructible from bombing" was built. People of my grandfather's generation defended their lofty ideals with practical actions. (Zhang Chenyang)
