Bringing bird's nest from Indonesia back home during the New Year? First understand these customs regulations

Indonesia is the largest producer of bird's nests. About 65-75% of the world's bird's nests are produced in Indonesia, with an annual export volume of 2,000 tons. Other Southeast Asian countries export far less than Indonesia: Malaysia 600 tons per year, Thailand 400 tons, and the Philippines about 5 tons.

The Lunar New Year is approaching. Many friends in Indonesia want to bring bird's nest back to China, but worry about whether it violates Chinese regulations? Eagle Vision's readers have recently discussed whether it is possible to bring bird's nest into the country.

The readers of Indonesian Eagle Vision asked the following questions, let’s answer them one by one:

1. Is it okay to bring the bird’s nest back from Indonesia? Bird's nest cannot be carried with me, can it be carried in checked luggage?

No matter whether it is hand luggage or checked luggage, dry bird’s nests are not allowed (except for sealed cans). According to the "List of Animals, Plants and Products Prohibited to be Carried and Mailed in the People's Republic of China", it is prohibited to carry and mail bird's nests other than cans into China.

2. What should I do if the dried bird’s nest is found?

Carrying a small amount of bird's nest is generally not suspected of smuggling, and will only be confiscated and destroyed/returned. Some readers said that the customs would allow him to retrieve the bird's nest within the specified number of days and then take it out of the country, but he must never enter the country, even if he pays taxes, it is useless.

If you bring a large amount of bird's nest into the country, you are suspected of smuggling. On July 31, 2019, a man from Hubei brought 38.7 kg of bird's nest into the country from Wuhan. He said that he just brought the bird’s nest back to his country to give it to his friends, but he was found to have a bird’s nest selling information in the circle of friends, and the bird’s nest box was also marked with a person’s name. There are also common ways to hide bird's nests in food packaging boxes, milk powder boxes, and water bottle packaging boxes. If the amount is large and the circumstances constitute a crime, it will be held criminally responsible.

3. I brought dried bird’s nest back to China when I had a friend, why didn’t I find it?

was not found as an example. The dried bird’s nest found was only confiscated, destroyed or returned.

4. What kind of bird's nest can be carried?

Canned bird’s nest is fine, because the canned food is generally sterilized and sealed.

5. What other items are prohibited?
