The China-Laos Railway adopts international standard rail with a gauge of 1435 mm. The Thai Railway adopts meter gauge with a gauge of 1000 mm. The interconnection of the two railway cargo transportation requires transshipment operations, that is, the goods are transported from one Vehicles of one gauge are unloaded and loaded onto vehicles of another gauge. The loading yard of Vientiane South Station that was completed and put into use this time is connected to the goods yard of Vientiane South Station of China-Laos Railway in the north and the existing Laos meter gauge railway Tanaleng Station in the south. It is invested and constructed by Laos-China Railway Co., Ltd., and a standard rail exchange yard is installed in the station. There are 1 loading line and 2 meter gauge changing lines. Cargo loading operations between standard gauge and meter gauge railway can be carried out here. The site can load 25 Thai meter gauge railway freight cars at the same time, with annual loading operations. The capacity is about 800,000 tons.

After the completion of the loading yard at Vientiane South Station, the China-Laos-Thailand Railway will be interconnected. The cross-border freight trains on the China-Laos Railway will be able to reach various logistics distribution centers such as Chengdu Chengxiang, Chongqing Tuanjie Village, and Xi'an Xinzhu in the north, as well as with China Europe The trains are connected, and the Thai capital Bangkok and Laem Chabang Port can be reached in the south via the Laos-Thailand meter-gauge railway. The land-sea combined international logistics channel will be more convenient and smooth.

The completion and commissioning of the Vientiane South Station reloading yard will further enhance the radiation and driving role of the China-Laos Railway, improve the efficiency of international transport between China and ASEAN countries, and reduce cross-border logistics costs. From Kunming, China to Laem Chabang Port, Thailand The transportation time is about 1 day shorter than that of car reloading, and the transportation cost is reduced by more than 20%. It is expected to attract more than 300,000 tons of Thai agricultural and sideline products, rubber and other cross-border goods to be transported to China through the China-Laos Railway every year, which will provide great benefits for China and Laos. The economic corridor and the construction of China-ASEAN community with a shared future provide reliable transport capacity support.

Since the opening of the China-Laos railway, the quantity and quality of passenger and cargo transportation have shown an upward trend. As of June 30, a total of 4 million passengers have been sent, including 520,000 passengers on the Laos section; a total of 4.94 million tons of cargo have been sent, of which cross-country 820,000 tons of cross-border cargo.
