Despite attempts to capture it over the years, the nearly one-ton crocodile has never been caught and may be lurking in the water to prepare to catch its next prey.
A giant cannibal that was said to have killed 300 people has not been arrested for years - despite the great efforts of people. The 20-foot-long Nile crocodile, nicknamed Gustav , is a crocodile in Lake Tanganyika, Burundi, East Africa, and locals nearby often fear it. It has actually become part of local folklore. It is not clear at the age of the giant beast, but experts estimate it is over 100 years old, and it is still alive and looking for new prey, with no evidence that it is dead. Although many attempted to capture the giant crocodile, no one succeeded. Some question Gustav’s claim that he is over a hundred years old, believing that his arch is still intact and that he may be close to 60 years old. Since Gustav has not been arrested, his length and weight are unknown, but in 2002, he was allegedly over 18 feet (5.5 meters) and weighed more than 2,000 pounds (910 kg) — almost a ton.
According to the British National Geographic report, there was a record of his attacks on people as early as 1987. Many deaths have been attributed to tribal wars and even serial killers over the years – but many suspect Gustav is behind them.
Witnesses often report similar characteristics, which suggests that it is often the same beast behind various killings. They often think of an unusually large crocodile with the same scar on the top of their heads. The scar is believed to be a gunshot wound caused by Gustav.
A 2004 documentary titled Capturing the Killer Croc is trying to catch the infamous crocodile. People carefully arranged the arrest operation. Designed to capture this giant predator and relocate him to safe waters.
However, multiple attempts to do this will not help. The team tried to use live bait and infrared cameras to observe the crocodile's every move, luring the crocodile into a big trap.
First, they use a live chicken and hang it on the water in the cage. Later, when the chicken failed to get Gustav's attention, they replaced it with a live goat.
However, it led to a greater disaster.
When they returned the next day, the trap was damaged in high waters after the storm, the camera was destroyed and the lens could not be recovered. Goats are nowhere to be found.
They assumed that Gustav might have successfully escaped and destroyed their carefully arranged traps in the process.
It is not clear whether the huge crocodile is still on the run. Some claim he was killed in 2019, but with no evidence to prove it, there is still concern that Gustav is still lurking underwater to this day.
