The fifth Jackie Chan International Action Movie Week ended on the evening of July 27 in Datong, Shanxi. As one of the judges of this movie week, New Zealand director Martin Campbell is undoubtedly the most dazzling "international star" in the judges' camp. In fact, Campbell was one of the initiators when the first Jackie Chan Film Week was held in Shanghai in 2015. This time in Datong, whether it is the opening and closing ceremonies or the forum with the theme of "The Fusion and Breakthrough of World Action Movies" held in Yungang Grottoes on the 26th, as long as he appears, the host will be famous as "Director 007" before the regular introduction of the host.
"Director 007" is worthy of Martin Campbell. As the director of the first film after the Cold War, Pierce Brosnan, who took over the "00" title, " Murder License ", Campbell directed "Golden Eye" and "Casino Royale" successively - think about the scene of Pierce Brosnan driving a tank to chase the Russian general on St. Petersburg Street, and think about Daniel Craig stopping a crash shortly after the opening - the former observes the reshaping of the relations between Russia and the West, which inherits the "mantic" of the Soviet Union, and the latter clearly observes the general trend of global counter-terrorism after the "9/11" terrorist attack. Thinking of this, it is a pity that this 76-year-old New Zealand director not only promoted two superstar actors who have become the first-line actors for playing Bond, but also made the "opening" contribution to the determination of the theme theme of 007 films in the new era and new era.

In fact, as an "evergreen tree" in the film industry, Martin Campbell picked up the directorial booth in the 1960s. The "British drama" "CI5" introduced in the early 1990s was once very popular in China. If you look at the huge director lineup of the series, he is one of them. On the big screen, looking back at the "Ten Blockbuster Era" (1994-2000) that started in the mainland since 1994, many Chinese people watched a big movie with the theme of extreme climbing on the big screen for the first time, and it also starts with the " Vertical Extreme " directed by him. Not to mention another screen hero who has a deep affection for Chinese audiences, the two remakes of "Zorro" are also his works. It is particularly worth mentioning that "Casino Royale" released in China at the end of 2006 is the first 007 movie released in China - when Martin Campbell and two starring Daniel Craig and Eva Green walked the premiere red carpet at Shanghai Cinema. Many domestic die-hard 007 fans still remember it vividly.
With the recovery of box office losses in the new millennium and the increase in Chinese capital's right to speak in the global film market, many internationally renowned filmmakers have visited China many times in recent years to attend various film events and work together with Chinese filmmakers. In "HTM1 British Confrontation " released in the mainland in 2017, Jackie Chan played the former agent fighting wits and courage with the British bureaucrats in Irish background played by Pierce Brosnan, and the director of the film was Martin Campbell.
htmlOn the evening of July 26, at the "Yungang Forum" of this Jackie Chan International Action Film Week, Martin Campbell took his experience of cooperation back then as an example and admitted that action actors like Jackie Chan have already learned to "focus on the role itself, no matter what action they want to make, they will always be within the role framework."In an exclusive interview with The Paper, Martin told reporters that he admired Jackie Chan and his team's professionalism very much. "I often say to him on the set, 'You are not Jackie Chan, you are Guan Yuming (the role played by Jackie Chan in the play).' In fact, he completed this role very well, allowing us to not only see his skills, but also a father who lost his beloved daughter."
"British duel" Martin Campbell talks to Jackie Chan
[Dialogue]
"The movie itself is a language that transcends national boundaries"
The Paper: As a senior action film director, how do you evaluate Jackie Chan's action style? In "British duel", what are the communication between the two?
Martin Campbell: As an action actor, I think no one can surpass his achievements. In the past, we have seen too many incredible action scenes, but Jackie Chan actually did it, and it was done by him himself! In "The Confrontation of Britain", Jackie Chan plays a veteran who participated in the Vietnam War, so I hope he can restrain his past habitual performances and go more to the hearts of the characters. I am on the set, even when filming action scenes, sometimes I will remind him loudly, "You are not Jackie". Chan, you are Guan Yuming. ”
Pengpai News: Over the past 20 years, Jackie Chan, Jet Li , Yuan Heping, Zhang Jin, etc., many Chinese action filmmakers have come to Hollywood to develop and bring new action creativity and experience. As a judge of this year's Datong Jackie Chan Film Week, how do you view this cultural exchange and integration?
Martin Campbell: movies themselves are languages that cross national boundaries. If you communicate with peers from different countries, you will get a lot of different inspiration. I like to work in a multicultural atmosphere. Jackie Chan's team's professionalism is respectable. They are never late and very disciplined.
Pengpai News: This year's Jackie Chan Film Week moves Shanxi, a central city in Datong, Shanxi used to be a region in China that advocates commercial civilization and martial spirit. How do you feel about local culture during this trip?
Martin Campbell: Oh, I know there are Yungang Grottoes and temples built on cliffs, but I really don’t have time to visit them on the spot. These days, we judges have been locked up in the cinema to watch the films one by one.
The Paper: This Jackie Chan International Action Movie Week screened the 1999 007 movie "Black Sun Crisis". In fact, the "Casino Royale" directed by you was the first 007 movie to be introduced to the public in China. What are your comments on this?
Martin Campbell: This is of course a great thing. I can see so many movie fans like this series of movies, and I came to China for the premiere promotion and played for three days for free. But sometimes I am a little confused, for example, in East Asia (cultural circle), "Casino Royale" and the entire Bond series are not that popular in Japan. Maybe it is cultural differences. "Star Trek" is such a popular movie in North America, but also in Asia.
"Casino Royale"
"Every Bond actor is completely different"
The Paper: How do you evaluate the first 007 movie "Dr. No"?
Martin Campbell : Oh, that happened in 1962. I watched this movie with my mother. She was originally a fan of 007 novels and a heavy obsessive person in the movie. I knew nothing about the story of 007 at the time, but that movie really impressed me deeply. The investment in "Dr. No" is said to be 1 million pounds. I don't think so now, but it was a big investment at that time. In short, that was a perfect start.
Pengpai News: First 007 Sean Connery , which drama did you impress him the most about the action scenes in which drama he was?
Martin Campbell: In the second "Love in Russia", he and Robert Shaw fought in the carriage of the Orient Express. That scene was great. You know the car space was so cramped, but the fighting design was so thrilling that there was no time to breathe.
"Russian Love"
Pengpai News: Which one do you like the most in the 007 movie starring Sean?
Martin Campbell: is of course "Goldfinger", and it will be one of the best Bond movies any time. The first thing that impressed me most about this movie was the supporting role Oddjob (played by Harold Sakata). He was a character who was like a god, not a thug in the general sense. Later, there were always similar "rude men" in the 007 movie. Next is Pussy Galore, played by Hornal Blackman, who is not a traditional sense of Bon girl , but an independent woman with a strong personality and strong personality. Bond even had no choice but to do anything to her at the beginning.
The Paper: The second Bond actor George Lazanbey, like you, comes from the Commonwealth countries outside the British Isles. He has only acted in one episode of 007 movie. Do you think his performance is underestimated?
Martin Campbell: No, I don’t agree with his performance in "The Queen’s Secretary".
The Paper: Pierce Brosnan in "Golden Eye", Daniel Craig in "Casino Royale", and the first 007 works by the two actors of 007 after the Cold War were directed by you, which is undoubtedly a great challenge and affirmation. How do you evaluate the styles of these two actors?
Martin Campbell: In fact, every Bond actor is completely different. Let's start from scratch. Sean Connery established Bond's image, and he is an amazing actor. Roger Moore is completely different from him. He loves to joke and is not strong. He is a very interesting "Bond". Timo Dalton is a great actor, and his acting skills have been tempered on the Shakesaw drama stage, but his role as Bond is not very good. Pierce Brosnan is a perfect "Bond". He looks sexy and handsome and is also very chic in action scenes. In fact, his style is very similar to Sean Connery. Daniel Craig, he is even tougher (Much Tougher), and has a dark side in his personality, most like Bond in the original novel.
The Paper: But whether it is the height standard of over 1.80 meters or his blonde hair (Bonde's hair in the novel is brown), it does not match the original work.
Martin Campbell: , British people always like to complain. After Daniel Craig was officially announced to play Bond, he may have been questioned that the 007 actors have never encountered before. Many people say that he has blonde hair or how tall he is, but the facts prove that he is very good at playing the role. His image and temperament are in line with the aesthetics of this era.
"The secret of 007 movies is to walk with the times"
Pengpai News: Daniel Craig will step down after "Bond 25" next year. The new 007 is a black actress. How do you evaluate this change?
Martin Campbell: That's not accurate, forget these media reports. Furthermore, according to the convention of the 007 movie, only after one movie is released will it be clear who the next Bond actor will be, but "Bond 25" is still under filming.
The Paper: Just as you said, the next Bond actor has not been confirmed yet, but now a black actress has taken over the "kill license" of 007. Will there be such a situation in the future: 007 and Bond are stripped away, 007 movies are 007 movies, and Bond movies are Bond movies?
Martin Campbell: 007 and James Bond are one. But who can say it correctly? Diversity is the trend of the world, and maybe the next 007 is a Chinese actor. But don't believe the news that is flying all over the sky while a Bond movie is being filmed.
"Golden Eye" Pierce Brosnan
The Paper: "Golden Eye" is the first movie in the 007 series that uses computer special effects. How do you think of the combination of CGI and live action scenes?
Martin Campbell: Compared with today's superhero movies, I still rely on computer special effects in "Golden Eye". Even if I use computer special effects, I hope it can be perfectly combined with live performances, and not let the picture look too exaggerated. This has always been my principle in filming.
The Paper: "Golden Eye" and "Casino Royale" all have plots of "punishment and torture" with SM meaning. Is this a kind of fun in your personal movies?
Martin Campbell: , that's really a coincidence. The script was written by the screenwriter, and I was just the director (laughing).
The Paper: Many Bond fans and book fans actually missed the Cold War style of Bond movies in the 1960s and 1970s. How can you not only satisfy young movie fans, but also not let the series of movies lose too many old fans' support?
Martin Campbell: In fact, the secret of the 007 movie for more than half a century is to be with the times. The screen style of each Bond actor is related to the theme and characteristics of the times he corresponds to. As you said, Pierce Brosnan plays 007 after the Cold War, and Daniel Craig is 007 after the "9/11 Incident". Now this era is even more turbulent, and people generally have a kind of criticism and doubts about public politics. These 007 films also have these characteristics.
