"I earn as much as my life requires. No matter how much money I have, I don't want to make it."
Self-reported by Ohara Bianli Editor Bai Wenping
My name is Ohara Bianli, I am 33 years old this year. I have lived in seclusion in Tokyo for 6 years and in Taiwan for 2 years.
For me, living in the mountains and away from the crowd is not called seclusion. The so-called "Looking in the city" is almost alone, living my own life, and I am very frugal and have no desires. I don’t watch TV, and sometimes I don’t know what’s going on outside. For me, this is a kind of seclusion.
I wanted to settle in Taiwan because I came before. I felt that the price and consumption here are low and humane. I always liked this place. In 2016, my book "I'm Not a Luser (Loser/Loser): A Happy Life with Less Money and Things, Five Days of Weekly Breaks" was published in Taiwan. I thought, let's try moving to Taiwan. I want to see if I can also live a life of second and fifth days in Taiwan, because I have been in Tokyo for 6 years before.
Now I help the travel magazine write articles, with an annual income of more than 50,000 yuan, and introduces Taiwan and attractions. I am responsible for producing a magazine every 3 months. It takes me one month to write this time, so I work for 1 month and rest for 2 months. This is my biggest workload. If I want to give me more money and ask me to do more things, I don’t want to.

Dayuanbianli's monthly expense list
Average monthly salary is 4,500 yuan, after paying rent and living expenses, I can save money!
I rented a 15-square-meter small suite in the suburbs of Taipei. It can be reached by 1 hour from the city center. The monthly rent is 950 yuan, including the Internet and water bill. It is enough to have a single bed, desk, chair, and cabinet at home. The electricity and gas bills are also calculated, and these are fixed expenses.
I won’t force myself to eat whatever I want. I buy most of them home or make them myself. I occasionally “go to the city” and go to restaurants and cafes. I have no friends in Taiwan, so I don’t need to socialize. I usually just take a walk and see the scenery. These are all free!
No money, the one who can survive is the homeless. When I was in Japan, I went to observe the homeless people. I found that they were wearing better clothes than me. I curiously asked a homeless uncle. The uncle said that his clothes were all picked up, and the roasted sweet potato he just ate was left over from the vendor next to me. I continued, "Where are you going to live in?" The uncle said that he just found a place to sleep nearby, and I couldn't help but say that it was amazing...
lowered the living standards.
I don’t buy luxury goods, rarely buy new clothes, electronic products... I have almost no desire, and can accept eating the same food every day. I think life after 20 is like subtraction. If you give up unnecessary things, you will save a lot of expenses.
I don’t use a mobile phone.
After graduating from high school, I had not made an appointment with my friend for three years. Once I looked through the address book of my mobile phone and found that 80% of them were former classmates. Although I was not without good friends, there was no need to contact me after graduation. I thought about it, why should I still need a mobile phone?
Many people think that it’s better not to run the Internet. Why not even bring your phone? But even so, I still have to pay a fixed monthly fee, and basically no one will call me.
I stopped my number, and I found that my life has not changed much. I just need to use the Internet at home to receive messages and reply messages every day.
My biggest interest is reading, and reading is free.
I like to go to libraries more than bookstores. There are more books in libraries. I read all kinds of books: history, culture, tourism, science, literature, finance, design... I especially like to understand the local area by reading the history and literary works of a certain country or region.
I don’t have money, but I have a lot of time.
Many people spend money on dressing up themselves, and it is also a kind of hair cut. My hair grows very fast, so I often need to trim it. I do it myself, so I can save all the money for cutting my hair, and in fact I cut it well.
and cleanser I can make baking soda powder, wash clothes by myself, and have less work hours, and I can do a lot of things myself.
Food is also a big expense. When I was in Tokyo, I often took a walk and picked weeds on the roadside to eat. Many weeds can be eaten. I think it is very strange. For example, some people planted fruit trees, but no one picked them, allowing birds and insects to peck at the pecking food. Then there are ginkgo and perilla on the roadside, and no one wants to eat them, but the market is priced at a price. Isn’t this very strange?
The ancients also picked wild grass and ate it. Why do modern people have to go to supermarkets?
wormwood
0 The most common weed on the roadside, soft tender leaves are edible, and are rich in plant fiber and carotene, which can eliminate constipation, prevent cancer, and change to flash anemia. After picking it up, I will put it in the sun for a long time, then boil it with salt water, then soak it in soy sauce, and finally fry it until it is crispy, can be stored, and eaten in ramen.
Golden needles/dayulium
Ordinary people will plant them in the yard or river bank. They eat flower buds. If the flowers are fully blooming, they will not taste good. They taste completely bitter. The cooking method is also very simple. Take it back and wash it with water, stir-fry in a pan, and add pepper and salt to eat.
Perilla
0 Near the place where I used to live, there are a lot of perilla growing. Perilla is also a weed, rich in iron, potassium, calcium, and vitamin B. It is very suitable for consumption in summer. After I pick it, I will cook it with sesame oil, and stir-fry it with garlic, dried plums, and pasta. It tastes very refreshing and delicious
Ginkgo
Autumn is the season for fruits. I often pick up ginkgo fruits when the fruits are knocked down after typhoon days. I borrow and pick them up when the ginkgo leaves are still green. When the leaves turn yellow, the fruits will fall naturally and are usually stepped on.
picking it up directly with your hands will cause allergies, but I don’t want to spend money to buy gloves, so I use the fallen leaves next to me to wrap the ginkgo and pick it up. When I go back, I only eat the part of the fruit. I have to soak it in water during the treatment. The ginkgo tastes very strong. I will seal it with a chain bag and wait until the fruit softens before taking out the seeds inside to eat.
When I was a child, I was bullied and often bullied by my classmates. I feel that it is not easy for me to survive until now.
I was alone in high school, watching movies and eating alone, and I enjoyed loneliness. Later I was going to apply for college. Just when I was hesitating whether to continue studying, the deadline for filling out the application was also passed. From then on, I thought, let my life be natural, and what should be come will come, so don’t rush to make a decision.
18 after graduating from the age of 18, I worked in the supermarket. In addition to working, I would come into contact with people, and I would just be locked up at home. It lasted for about three years. I found that I was a little "degenerated" and didn't know how to get along with people.
I knew it would not work if I kept it like this. I decided to travel around the world. After I made this decision, I found another supermarket to work part-time. After saving the air ticket money in four months, I set off.
I went to London, Los Angeles, Australia, New Zealand , Hawaii...
What impressed me the most was that I was in London. I had no place to stay in the first night, so I spent the night in a nightclub. My friends inside asked me to stay in their house. Later, I found a job holding a sign in the local area and worked for a week. The boss liked me very much and asked me to be a clerk. At that time, my colleagues from Mexico also helped me introduce accommodation. I lived a very simple life. I bought vegetables and cooked them at home, and made milk tea with tap water... I realized that I was living a similar life as in Japan, and I also found that there were really many people helping me.
After the trip, I have done a lot of work, working in a factory and working as a clerk in a bookstore. I have to work overtime every day, often working more than 12 hours, earning up to 200,000 yen in a month, about 13,000 yuan, but I am so tired! He simply resigned.
I think Japan is a country with high overwork, high competition and pressure. You have to make a lot of money, work overtime, and work on Saturdays. When you get home, you live in a small suite. The point is that most of your salary is spent on renting a house, which is very tired and has no quality of life. And you have taught you to study good books and get high scores since you were a child.
I resigned and moved to Tokyo, and found a nursing job. I worked two days a week and rested for five days to help the elderly and patients turn over and take care of them. I earn about 70,000 to 80,000 yen (about 6,000 yuan) a month. I will put the expenses within about 60,000 yen (5,000 yuan) so that I can save some money.
I chose to live in Tama, Tokyo, which is one hour away from the city, but the rent is half of the rent in the city, so the main housing expenses are saved. Moreover, there are many parks and flower gardens here. I can pick weeds after walking, which saves a lot of food.
I often go to cafes and chat with my boss for a long time. He thought my life was very interesting and could be shared with everyone, so I first shared it online. Later, in 2015, I published my first book in Japan, and shared my life in seclusion when I was in my 20s. This is really a coincidence. I never thought that I could write books, and I didn’t care much about promotion and sales.
Later, my book was listed on the ranking of bestsellers in Japan, and then the first book was translated into Chinese in 2016 and published in Taiwan; the second book is "Can you live happily in Tokyo even if you earn 900,000 yuan per year". My annual income is indeed 900,000 yen, while the annual income of 900,000 yen was listed as a poor person in Japan. But who says whether you are poor or not is determined by the government? I think I'm living a wealthy life.
The third book I wrote for people who don’t want to work, and it’s about why some people have low incomes but are very happy. In my opinion, it is very creative and imaginative to think with their minds about how can run their life without spending money.
My lifestyle seems unacceptable to my parents' generation. Some people will also scold me for saying that society is like me and the country will decline, but I don't care.
I don’t think I really give up on myself. I still do what I like and live the life I think is happy. And I also have savings. Even if something happens today, I don’t need to borrow money from my parents or friends.
I am very happy, everything is just right.
