According to the latest news released by the China Manned Space Engineering Office , the Shenzhou 14 astronaut crew has recently completed the installation and testing of the in-orbit assembly equipment of the environmental control and maintenance system in the Wentian Experimental Cabin. As a backup of Tianhe core module, the Wentian Experimental Cabin is used to coordinate the core module to manage and control the manned environment of the entire space station during the daily operation of the space station, including the regeneration and maintenance function.

The cost of transporting materials from the earth to space is too high, so the recycling of materials in the space station should be realized as much as possible. China Manned Space Engineering Office News shows that my country's space station regenerative environmental control and life insurance system includes 6 regenerative subsystems, namely the electrolytic oxygen generation subsystem, carbon dioxide removal subsystem, trace harmful gas removal subsystem, urine treatment subsystem, water treatment subsystem and carbon dioxide reduction subsystem.

It is understood that in the previous manned flight missions of the space station's key technology verification stage, the regeneration and maintenance system has realized the recycling and utilization of oxygen , water and other resources through the operation of the first five subsystems, making the material closure of water resources exceed 80%. This time, after the Shenzhou 14 astronaut crew entered the space station, the three astronauts, with the cooperation of ground personnel, completed the assembly and testing of the carbon dioxide reduction atomic system carried by the Tianzhou 4 upstream. This carbon dioxide reduction atomic system can further reuse the carbon dioxide generated by astronauts' breathing and act on the space station. Through the stable operation of this system, about one kilogram of water can be recovered every day in the space station, increasing the material closure of water resources to more than 90%. In other words, more than 90% of the drinking water for astronauts in orbit has been produced through recycled water, and less than 10% are supplied by the ground through cargo spacecraft.
