Recently, Google has revised the Gmail login page of its email address. Before, you had to enter the username and password in the same page before you could log in. Now the username and password input are divided into two pages.
According to Google's explanation, this change is to gradually introduce new verification methods to replace the functions of traditional passwords. Google has not further explained what the "new verification method" they planned is, but the "user + password" method is far from an ideal security verification system and has become a consensus in the industry.
Google believes that the reform of the login page has at least the following benefits: First, prepare for future verification methods updates; second, this login method is more concise and clear for users who use several Google accounts at the same time; finally, for SAML SSO users who use school or enterprise ports to log in to Gmail, the new login page has a better user experience.
However, some users questioned Google's explanation. Among them, most users complain that this login method is more time-consuming; secondly, after the user name and password page are separated, as long as anyone knows the email name, they can see the user's name or even photos without a password, which will cause certain privacy issues. For the latter question, Google's solution is that users will only display names and photos and other information on the page when they have logged in with common addresses or devices that have logged in to their email address, such as home computers.
In fact, last year Google has used this new login method on Android system, and this time the reform of web version login is only a step further in this direction.
