As a person who is always on the road, I have seen countless mountains and countless waters. Those mountains are tall and steep, making people feel more perseverance; while the water, calm and clear, makes people feel open-minded.
The natural scenery is beautiful enough, but sometimes, I also want to change my taste and see the scenery transformed by human power, such as the Guangzhou Pumped Storage Power Station.
This was China’s first and the largest pumped storage power station in the world at that time.
You may ask, what’s so good about a power station? And, for safety reasons, why would the power station let you play casually?
In fact, the Guangzhou Pumped Storage Power Station is a national industrial tourism demonstration site and the only high-tech tourist attraction in Guangdong Province.
It is surrounded by turquoise lakes and winding mountains, like a hidden pearl. If you hadn’t seen it with your own eyes, you would never have imagined that a power station could be so beautiful and unforgettable.
The Guangzhou Pumped Storage Power Station is different from the hydropower stations we are usually familiar with. It uses the electric energy at the trough of electric load to pump water to the upper reservoir, and then releases the water to the lower reservoir to generate electricity during the peak period of electric load.
It can convert excess electric energy when the grid load is low into high-value electric energy during peak periods of the grid. It is indeed very clever.
Guangzhou Pumped Storage Power Station is located in Xiaoshan, Lutian Town, Conghua District, on the north side of the Nankun Mountains, about 100 kilometers away from Guangzhou City. It consists of the power plant area and the tourist resort area, and is known as "a pearl of southern Guangdong".
If you are interested in the power plant area, you can also visit it.
But in comparison, tourist resort areas are the focus that most people pay more attention to.
The tourist area is dominated by virgin sub-forests, surrounded by mountains and with fresh air. What is particularly worth mentioning is that the green coverage rate reaches more than 90% and the negative ions in the air are high. It is truly a lung-cleansing holy land.
Among the mountains, the upper and lower reservoirs are like two pieces of emerald inlaid in it.
Let’s start our exploration journey from the Lower Reservoir.
Come in the early morning, and the reservoir is bathed in light rain and mist. It is hazy and shadowy, and it is hard to see clearly, but it has a bit more charming tenderness.
The mountains in the distance are very shallow and light, and they outline a curve in the sky, like undulating waves.
When the sky gets brighter, the water becomes clearer. When there is no wind, it is like a complete mirror, reflecting the surrounding scenery.

I can't help but imagine how comfortable and free it would be to take a small boat at this moment, slowly paddle through the water, and have close contact with the green lake water.
After visiting the Lower Reservoir, you need to drive through a 13-kilometer winding mountain road to go to the Upper Reservoir.
The upper reservoir is 820 meters above sea level. After climbing up, you can enjoy the vast sky, vast water surface and endless mountains.
Compared with the Lower Reservoir, the temperature of the Upper Reservoir is much lower. In summer, it is definitely an ideal summer resort.
As soon as we arrived at Shangreservoir, we were faced with the magnificent Shangku Dam. Don't underestimate this dam. It is 300 meters long and 8 meters wide. It is strong enough to withstand a once-in-a-thousand-year flood.
Next to the dam is the overflow dam. The purpose of the overflow dam is to drain water through when the reservoir is too full.
It is a very special experience to see such a modern behemoth in a green mountain and green water.
After passing the dam, continue hiking along the winding plank road along the mountainside. You will feel like you are walking through pristine nature, with steep cliffs on one side and dense jungle on the other. I am fascinated by every scenery on the road, but I am looking forward to what kind of surprises I will encounter.
No, Half an Acre Pond has arrived. This is the most beautiful place in the Upper Reservoir.
Hearing the name of Banmu Pond always reminds people of what Zhu Xi wrote: Half an acre of square pond opens up, and the skylight, clouds and shadows linger together.
Just as the poet wrote, this half-acre pond is a small water surface, quiet and waveless.
There are pavilions with profound ancient charm by the water. Their simple shapes and flying eaves seem to instantly transport people to the classical gardens in the misty Jiangnan.
Against the backdrop of the surrounding green trees, the vermilion in the pavilion looks even brighter.
A small curved bridge adds a bit of aura to the water.
Only when I got closer did I realize that this small bridge also hid a mystery. A small waterfall passed under the bridge, making a gurgling sound.
In a trance, it seems that a distant mountain breeze is blowing here, carrying the fragrance of plants, being wetted by the water surface, then blending, and going to a farther place.

It is rare to have such a quiet corner, and you will feel that time has slowed down. Between heaven and earth, you can only hear your own heartbeat.
It started to rain again, small holes were poked out of the water surface, and the distant mountains hid in the clouds and mist again, playing hide and seek.
After the rain stops, continue walking up the mountain along another section of the plank road.
Reaching the highest point, looking far into the distance, the vision suddenly opened up. Lush green trees are crowded together and perfectly intertwined with the clear water, making it picturesque.
It's just very hazy, and many details can't be seen clearly. Even the majestic Shang Reservoir Dam has hidden its figure. I can only feel that the world at present is extremely beautiful.
The majesty of the mountains and the openness of the water constitute a landscape painting of great opening and closing.
After walking around the Guangzhou Pumped Storage Power Station, I couldn’t help but sigh that man-made products can coexist harmoniously with nature and create even more beautiful scenery.
The power station itself is not promoted too much. There are very few people who know about this place and come to visit. You can enjoy your time alone.
I sincerely hope that this place can always be kept low-key, without too many people disturbing it, and just be beautiful alone.
