A woman in Missouri, USA, hid her husband’s body in the refrigerator for nearly a year after his death. The reason she gave was staggering because she was worried that doctors would use her husband's body for research and remove his brain.

Barbara Waters, 67, from Joplin, Missouri, was found dead by police earlier this month after the body of her husband, Paul Patton. According to reports, Patton died on December 30 last year. A witness told police that Patton's body had been stored in a refrigerator in his wife's bedroom since his death in December. It is reported that police encountered the witness while investigating an unrelated arson case nearby. Police said an autopsy found no signs of foul play.

According to information obtained by The Associated Press, Barbara told police that her husband suffered from amyotrophic lateral sclerosis . It is said that Barbara had been worried that her husband would be used for medical research and his brain would be removed. She became even more paranoid after her husband's death, so instead of reporting his death to the authorities, she hid his body. Authorities said there was no evidence her fears were well-founded.

Police documents show that Missouri health department workers went to the family's home last year after receiving a report that Barbara had prohibited Barton from receiving medical treatment. Although Barbara did not allow staff or police to enter her home, she pushed Barton to the door so they could see her. Police said Barton appeared frail and sickly but was breathing on his own and had no signs of being assaulted. During a subsequent visit in July, police said Barton appeared to be clean and well cared for.

Barbara said she wanted her husband to see a doctor, but was worried. Barbara kept mentioning that her husband's body would be used for research. She said she did not want her husband's body to be dismembered. Since they refused to be studied, it was difficult to find doctors to help them.

After hiding her husband's body in the refrigerator for nearly a year, Barbara was charged with abandoning the body and could be sentenced to up to four years in prison. However, on the 21st local time, Barbara was released from house arrest. Her lawyer said that while Barbara did not immediately report Barton's disappointment, the law requires the body to be abandoned and, in this case, the body remained in the home. Currently, the case is still under further review.
