The American Academy of Humanities and Sciences is the oldest and most prestigious honorary institution in the United States. The selected academicians are all top "thinkers and actors" in the fields of science and technology, humanities, arts, law, academics, public affairs, etc. The institution announced the list of academicians in 2017 on April 12, with a total of 228 elected, including 188 academicians and 40 foreign academicians.
Wu Xiuming is a prolific scholar specializing in the Internet, media and communications industries. He pioneered the term "net neutrality". His pioneering book "The Master Switch: The Rise and Fall of Information Empires" elaborates on the history of the information industry and is rated as one of the best books of 2010 by The New Yorker and Fortune Magazine. Wu Xiuming's father, Alan Wu, and his mother, Gillian Wu, are both immunologists. My father was born in Taiwan, China, with a ancestral home in Fujian, and my mother is a Canadian British. Wu Xiuming was born in the United States. After his father fell ill, his family moved to Canada. In 1980, his father died young. Wu Xiuming and his family moved to Switzerland. When he grew up, he returned to Canada and the United States to study.
Wu Xiuming, 44, graduated from Canadian McGill University in 1995 with a bachelor's degree in biochemistry and obtained a law degree from Harvard University in 1998. After graduation, he worked in the Department of Justice, served as an assistant judge in the circuit court and the Supreme Court. He used to work for Riverstone Network and later transferred to academia and is currently a tenured professor at Columbia University's Law School. In 2013, he was named one of the "100 Most Influential Lawyers in America".
