When Chen Qili was 15 years old, he joined the "Zhonghe Gang", a gang organized by more than a dozen young people from other provinces. During this period, it didn't take long for the gang's leader, Sun Depei, to be arrested and imprisoned for murder. Soon the gang was leaderless and its members were scattered. So Chen Qili founded the "Bamboo Union Gang" with several important members, and then began to expand the power of his gang and constantly recruit members from outside. In the 1960s, Chen Qili led his gang members to fight bravely against their biggest rival, the Sihai Gang. He was very strategic in dealing with the enemy. He first exploited the opponent's weaknesses and secretly reported the case to the police to expose the Sihai Gang's drug trafficking. Therefore, the Sihai Gang was wanted. Finally, it divided the Sihai Gang's internal forces and took away more than half of the Sihai Gang's territory in the north.
Subsequently, Chen Qili took the opportunity to wipe out other gangs in the north. As a result, the Bamboo Union Gang became the largest gang organization in the north. In the 1980s, the total number of members of the Bamboo Union Gang reached 200,000. And it has developed into a gangster group, operating many industries such as casinos, real estate, and engineering, and has branches in many places abroad. Of course, since Chen Qili is so powerful, he will naturally be a thorn in the side of the Taiwan authorities. In exchange for power and status, the Taiwan authorities asked Chen Qili to assassinate the famous American writer Jiang Nan. Then after Chen Qili succeeded in the assassination, the Taiwan authorities only gave him a reward of 40,000 US dollars and a few bad checks for "decentralization".
Soon, Chen Qili was wanted by the US police and was sentenced to life imprisonment. After Chen Qili was released in 1991, he no longer believed in politicians. After the " Jiangnan Case ", Chen Qili was wanted by the Taiwan police on suspicion of illegal business operations due to his involvement in the gray industry of the Bamboo Alliance. He fled to Cambodia for refuge. After that, Chen Qili lived a low-key and semi-reclusive life, always paying attention to current affairs on both sides of the Taiwan Strait. On October 4, 2007, he fell seriously ill and died in Hong Kong at the age of 64. The Bamboo Union Gang held a gangland "funeral of the century" for him, which attracted the attention of the outside world. His two biggest wishes before he died were: first, that Taiwan would return to the embrace of the motherland; second, that he would have the opportunity to visit the opening ceremony of the Beijing Olympics.
