To be fair, the Athletic has pretty explicitly been overpaying writers - being a relatively small startup has allowed them to do that because they're flush with VC cash and so are being super aggressive in getting guys - even by paying well above market value.

Yahoo sports don't have VC funding and an Expansion mandate
