reported that later that day, after the Arema football team lost to the Surabaya football team 2-3 in the Indonesia Super League, there was a fierce conflict between fans on both sides. In order to stop the riot, the police used tear gas.
AP reported that hundreds of people ran to the exit, trying to avoid tear gas. Some people suffocated to death in the chaos, others were trampled, and 34 people died almost on the spot. At least 300 people were taken to local hospitals.
