China Taiwan Network, November 29 Beijing News Zhao Chunshan, honorary professor at the Mainland China Institute of Tamkang University, Taiwan, pointed out in his speech at the 8th Cross-Strait Think Tank Academic Forum that the Xinhai Revolution is the common memory of the Chinese people on both sides of the strait. The purpose of this revolution led by Mr. Sun Yat-sen is not only to overthrow the imperial system and establish a republic, but also to enable China to move towards a prosperous people's livelihood, a prosperous country and a national rejuvenation. This is the spirit of the Xinhai Revolution.

Zhao Chunshan said, "The revolution has not been successful yet, and comrades still need to work hard." Mr. Zhongshan is foresighted. For 110 years, China has always been in internal and external troubles, and the Chinese people have been hit by warlord separatism, Japanese invasion of China and the civil war between the Kuomintang and the Communist Party. After the division of the two sides of the Taiwan Strait in 1949, they each chose to take different development paths. Although the road is still full of bumpy, relying on the cultural heritage left by our ancestors and the unique political wisdom of the Chinese, Taiwan's economic development was once described by foreign media as "too big to be ignored"; mainland China has also gone from "standing up", "becoming rich" to "becoming strong".

Zhao Chunshan believes that "long-term separation will lead to unity" and seeking national unity is Mr. Sun Yat-sen's ideal. Although the two sides of the Taiwan Strait have been divided and ruled for a long time, the so-called "different paths and the same destination" has been the goal pursued by both sides of the Taiwan Strait. In addition, from 2008 to 2016, the two sides of the Taiwan Strait have also created the glory of "big exchanges, big cooperation, and big development". Helplessly facing the world's major changes that have not been seen in a century, not only has the internal situation of cross-straits changed, but cross-strait relations have also become the focus of attention of the international community under the impact of China-US strategic competition. What is even more unimaginable is that Taiwan has become the "most dangerous place on the earth" written by foreign media.

Zhao Chunshan said that Mr. Sun Yat-sen emphasized that "unity is strength." To be united, you must have empathy, be able to put yourself in your shoes, and look at the problem from the other person's perspective. It is inevitable that the two sides of the Taiwan Strait will have different development processes in a long-term division and differences are inevitable; but the two sides should emphasize "common things" rather than highlighting the differences. In addition, cross-strait interaction cannot only stay in the stage of "seeking common ground while reserving differences", but should think about how to further "exist and transform differences". After all, cross-strait relations are like "walking against the current, if you don't advance, you will retreat."

Focusing on the common goal of the great rejuvenation of the Chinese nation, Zhao Chunshan proposed that the two sides should base themselves on the fundamental interests of the Chinese nation, based on Chinese culture, narrow the differences in value between the two sides; based on win-win cooperation, strengthen the mutual exchange between the two sides in material terms; based on the progress of harmony and avoid war, establish a military mutual trust mechanism between the two sides. He said that he hopes the mainland will view Taiwan’s needs for survival and development positively and regard Taiwan as a helping force to promote cross-strait peaceful development relations, rather than a resistance. Because Taiwan should not and will not be absent from the road to national rejuvenation.

The 8th Cross-Strait Think Tank Academic Forum with the theme of "Promoting the Spirit of Xinhai and Creating the Great Cause of Rejuvenation" was held in Beijing on the 26th. This forum was jointly organized by the Taiwan Institute of the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, National Taiwan Compatriots Association , National Taiwan Research Association , Taiwan Research Institute , Xiamen University Taiwan Research Institute , Taiwan 21st Century Foundation, and the Chinese University of Culture and Academy of Social Sciences. More than 90 experts and scholars from both sides of the Taiwan Strait, Taiwanese businessmen and youth participated through video links. (China Taiwan Network Gao Xu)
