According to Digitimes, TSMC plans to purchase 55 EUV lithography machines by the end of 2021 to accelerate the development of EUV-related process processes.
In fact, half of the EUV lithography machines put into use in the world are currently in the hands of TSMC. As of the end of the second quarter of this year, ASML has shipped about 71 lithography machines, which means TSMC has installed (note that it will take less than half a year from obtaining parts to using the calibration machine), and there is still a gap of 25.
ASML plans to ship 22 lithography machines in the second half of this year, and up to 50 units next year. In other words, TSMC plans to grab more than one-third of these supplies. What’s more important is that the price of an EUV lithography machine is about US$120 million (about RMB 800 million), which means that before the end of 2020, TSMC will spend more than RMB 44 billion to buy EUV machines, which is approximately equivalent to TSMC’s total revenue for the current two months.
