In modern China, many universities were founded and modern Western education models were introduced, which cultivated a large number of elites in the intellectual circles for China, had a profound impact on the education circle and society, and made indelible contributions to China's higher education. But unfortunately, during the major adjustment of colleges and universities in 1952, these universities were merged into other universities, becoming a page of memory and history of the times.
1, Yenjing University
Yenjing University was founded in 1919. The first president was Stu Leiden , which is the best university in modern China. Professors and graduates of Yenching University are mainly active in the education, politics and religion circles in China. Feng Youlan, Qian Mu, Zhou Zuoren, Zheng Zhenduo, , Bing Xin and others are all students of Yenching University.
In the departmental adjustment in 1952, Yenching University was abolished by , liberal arts and science were mostly incorporated into Peking University , engineering was incorporated into Tsinghua University , and law school and sociology were incorporated into Beijing School of Political Science and Law (now China University of Political Science and Law ). The campus is accepted by Peking University.
2. Zhendan University
was originally named Zhendan College. It was founded by Ma Xiangbo on February 27, 1903 at the former site of Xujiahui Observatory in Shanghai. It is the first private university in modern China. Zhendan University was once known as the "University of the Oriental Paris". It is the first school in China to carry out postgraduate education and award doctoral and master's degrees. It owns China's first museum, "Shendan Museum" (the predecessor of the Shanghai Museum of Nature). By 1947, Zhendan University had a medical school, a school of science and technology, a school of law, a school of arts and science, a school of arts and sciences, and two affiliated middle schools, and two advanced nurse schools.
In 1952, Zhendan University was abolished, and its medical school, St. John's University School of Medicine , and Tongde Medical School merged to form the Shanghai Second Medical College on its original site.
3, Qilu University
Qilu University was founded in 1864, co-sponsored by the North American Presbyterian Church and the British Baptist Church, and jointly organized by multiple Christian churches from the United States, Britain and Canada. It is one of the earliest church universities in China. During its heyday, Qilu University was known as the "No. 1 institution of North China" and was known as the "Southern Qi and Northern Yan" together with Yanjing University. The school has the strongest medical school and is known as "Northern Union, South Xiangya, East Qilu, West China and West China".
In 1952, national universities were adjusted, Qilu University was disintegrated, the three departments of biology, physics and chemistry in the School of Science were incorporated into today's Shandong Normal University , and the Department of Pharmacy was incorporated into today's China Pharmaceutical University ; the Tiansuan Department in the School of Literature was incorporated into Nanjing University , and the observatory was also moved to Zijinshan; the Department of Economics and Shandong Accounting College established Shandong University ; other majors in the School of Literature were incorporated into today's Shandong University ; the college of agriculture was now Shandong Agricultural University ; the medical school belonged to today's Shandong University ; the medical school was now Shandong Agricultural University ; the medical school belonged to today's java medical school, Shandong University of Traditional Chinese Medicine, and Taishan Medical College.
4. Jinling University
Jinling University, abbreviated as Jinda, was born in 1888. The American Christian Church American and American Association was founded in Nanjing, and is a sister university with Cornell University in the United States. At that time, the society evaluated it as "the best church university in China" and enjoyed the reputation of "the hero of Jiangdong" and "the hero of Zhongshan".
1951 Jinling University was incorporated into Jinling Women's Arts and Sciences College and was rebuilt into a public Jinling University. In 1952, the department was adjusted, Jinling University was abolished, the main body was merged into Nanjing University, and the other departments participated in the establishment of other Chinese universities. Its historical archives are included in Nanjing University.
5. Shanghai St. John's University
was founded in Shanghai in 1879. Joseph Shi, the Bishop of the American Anglican Church, merged the original two Anglican schools, Peiya Academy and Dun Academy to form St. John's Academy. It is the first higher education institution in China. Later it developed into a comprehensive church university with 5 colleges and 16 departments. It was one of the best universities in Shanghai and even China at that time, and was called "Oriental Harvard". St. John's University has many famous alumni, including: Song Ziwen, Lin Yutang , Zhang Ailing, Zou Taofen, Zhou Youguang and others.
In the national college and department adjustment in 1952, St. John's University was disbanded and merged into many universities in Shanghai. It was sorted by the number of departments merged, namely East China Normal University , Fudan University , Tongji University , Shanghai School of Finance and Economics, East China School of Political Science and Law, Shanghai Second Medical College, etc.
6, Soochow University
Soochow University is a church university founded by the American Christian Supervisory Council in Suzhou in 1900. The famous American missionary Lin Lezhi served as the chairman of Soochow University. During the Republic of China, Soochow University was famous in China for its excellent law school and was hailed as "the first-class and most famous law school in South China."
1952 adjustment of colleges and universities in the country. The former Soochow University, the School of Culture and Education of Southern Jiangsu and the Department of Mathematics of Jiangnan University, was merged into Suzhou University, and developed into Suzhou University. The School of Law and the Department of Accounting have become the basic components of East China University of Political Science and Law and Shanghai University of Finance and Economics.
7. West China University of Science and Technology
West China University of Science and Technology is the first modern university established in Chengdu and even western China. It is the birthplace of Chinese dental medicine and enjoys the reputation of "first in East Asia". Its various subjects in arts, science and philosophy were also at the top in the southwest region at that time.
1952 During the department adjustment, the school’s medical school accepted the Chongqing University School of Medicine and established the present-day West China Medical Center of Sichuan University; the School of Arts and Sciences was merged to Sichuan University; the Department of Sociology and Ethnology (i.e. Anthropology) formed the present-day Southwest University of Nationalities; the School of Engineering was merged to Sichuan United University; the Agricultural College was merged to Sichuan Agricultural University.
8. Fu Ren University
1925, the Chinese Catholic leaders Ying Lianzhi and Ma Xiangbo founded Fu Ren Society, and in 1927, Fu Ren Society was upgraded to Fu Ren University. In 1951, the People's Government took over Fu Ren University and was incorporated into Beijing Normal University in 1952.
In 1960, Fu Ren University resumed its school in Taiwan. The founding of Fuda University has been nearly 90 years since its founding, and has been resuming the school in Taiwan for more than 50 years, with a total of nearly 200,000 alumni at home and abroad. Alumni are all over the world and have celebrities in all major professional fields.
9, Lingnan University
Lingnan University was founded in 1888. In September 1912, the Chinese name was changed to "Lingnan School". In the adjustment of college departments in 1952, the various disciplines of Lingnan University were merged and adjusted, and formed South China University of Technology ( South China University of Technology ), Sun Yat-sen University, South China Agricultural College ( South China Agricultural University ), South China Normal University ( South China Normal University ) and Sun Yat-sen Medical College (Sun-sen Medical University).
10, Zhijiang University
was jointly founded by the Christian North American Presbyterian Church and the South American Presbyterian Church. It was officially named Zhijiang University in 1914. Its predecessor was Ningbo Chongxin Yi School, which was founded by the American Presbyterian Church in 1845.
In 1952, due to the adjustment and disbandment of college departments, the departments were split into Zhejiang Normal University , Zhejiang University , Fudan University, etc., and Zhijiang University was declared over.
