After the introduction of circuit board production technology into China in 1956, local circuit board companies have been established nationwide like mushrooms after a rain. They took the express train of reform and opening up and quickly developed into the country with the largest PCB output value in the world.
2000, more than 70% of the global PCB output value was distributed in the Americas, Europe and Japan and other regions. Due to the late start of China, its output value only accounted for about 6% of the global total output value.
Since the beginning of the 21st century, the focus of the PCB industry has been constantly shifting to Asia, and the market structure has quietly changed.
In 2003, the output value and import and export volume of PCB exceeded US$6 billion, surpassing the United States for the first time and becoming the world's second largest PCB producer. The proportion of output value also increased from 6% in 2000 to 15.30%.
In 2006, it replaced Japan, which has always ranked first, and became the country with the largest output value in the PCB track. In the following six years, my country's PCB output value has always remained the world's number one. In 2020, the proportion of PCB output value has exceeded 50%, accounting for 53.8% of the global total output value.
Although my country has been the world's largest PCB manufacturing base for many years and the largest number of printed circuit boards, we have always been a manufacturing country rather than a PCB manufacturing powerhouse. In terms of circuit board types with high technical content, our ability to mass produce is very weak.
According to Prismark's statistical data on the proportion of PCB output values in major regions around the world, 47.8% of my country's PCB output values come from medium and low-level boards. Compared with other manufacturing powerhouses, the United States only accounts for 31.4% of this type of circuit board output value, and Japan is even lower, accounting for only 19.6%.
This shows that the world's largest output value in my country currently comes from low- and low-end products. Among the production of circuit boards, the largest number of medium- and low-end products are ordinary single-sided, double-sided, multi-layer board and other mid- and low-end products. As a major manufacturing country, this feature of the PCB industry is particularly significant.
, and the output value of mid-to-high-end products such as high-layer, HDI board, , IC package substrate, rigid-flex bonding board, metal substrate, etc., accounts for very low my country, with a proportion of only 48.1%, while the proportion of mid-to-high-end products in the United States, Japan and Asia is as high as 68.6%, 80.4%, and 84.7%.
single-view IC packaging substrate with the highest technical content among circuit boards. my country only accounts for 4.2% of this type of board products, while Japan accounts for as high as 44.6%, and we are only 9.42% of that of Japan. The big gap shown by data comparison nakedly reveals the pain points and disadvantages of my country's circuit board industry.
printed circuit board industry is a fiercely competitive market. Although the global PCB output value is now shifting to my country and some sectors have also begun to replace domestically, the weak high-end circuit boards may become a constraint on the process of domestic PCB replacement and become the biggest constraint on my country's circuit board manufacturing industry's upgrading from a manufacturing power to a manufacturing power.
Since the performance requirements of high-end products are far higher than those of mid- and low-end products, such as IC packaging substrates, they have the characteristics of high density, high precision, high number of feet, high performance, miniaturization and thinning, so they have higher requirements in various technical parameters. Currently, the main technologies and production capacity of IC packaging substrates are mastered in the large PCB manufacturers in Taiwan. According to statistics from TPCA (Taiwan Circuit Board Association), this type of product accounts for about 15.1% of the overall output value of PCB in Taiwan, making it the fourth largest PCB product in Taiwan.
Optimizing the product structure of circuit boards and increasing the proportion of high-end circuit boards is something that must be done in the further development of my country's PCB industry. To enhance the production capacity of high-end products, we must rely on the technology of upstream PCB substrates, downstream manufacturing and supporting equipment manufacturers to jointly improve each other's technologies.
As my country advances to a higher level, domestic substitution will surely win in the booming wave of global electronic information industry.
