[CNMO News] On September 30, South Korea's Korean Air announced that it recently signed a memorandum with Shell to purchase the sustainable aviation fuel "SAF" (a fuel produced by alternative raw materials such as waste edible oil, domestic waste and industrial by-product gases, rather than traditional fossil resources such as oil and coal).

SAF is an important carbon emission reduction tool for the aviation industry to respond to climate change and attracts much attention. Compared with traditional aviation fuels, this fuel can reduce carbon emissions by 80%. Therefore, countries mainly in Europe and the United States have recently introduced many support policies for SAF production and supply, and corresponding investment support is also expanding. However, due to high prices and insufficient production facilities, this fuel supply remains insufficient compared to expected demand.
It is reported that Korean Air has established a stable supply and demand network in the Asia-Pacific and the Middle East, and Shell will provide SAF supply. They are planning to expand their cooperation with world-class refineries to be able to receive SAF stably around the world, including Europe and the United States. Korean Air used SAF-fueled aircraft for the first time in South Korea in November 2017 to operate the Chicago-Incheon section.
In addition, in February this year, Korean Air signed a "commercial agreement with the aviation industry to provide hydrogen supply and infrastructure development for airports" with Incheon International Airport Company, Airbus and Air Liquefied to reduce carbon emissions to combat climate change.
