A reporter from Shuxiang Weekly of Beijing Evening News interviewed Ji Lei, deputy director of the China Modern Literature Museum on the evening of the 21st, and introduced Comrade Shu Yi's illness and his work during his tenure at the China Modern Literature Museum.
The following is the interview content:
Shuxiang: I heard that Mr. Shu Yi has been in poor health in recent years and has been in the hospital.
Jielei: Yes. He was tired from an interview six years ago because of an interview. The next day, he suddenly suffered a cerebral hemorrhage of and was sent to Xuanwu Hospital for emergency treatment. The effect after craniotomy was not very ideal, and the bleeding volume reached 120 ml. After the operation was stable, he underwent a year of recovery in other hospitals. Later, the condition worsened and I was transferred to Tongren Hospital and stayed in ICU . Director Shu’s wife, Mr. Yu Bin, said that medical staff are doing their best to treat Director Shu. It is rare for critically ill patients like him to last for such a long time. Today she told me that it would be rare for him to last for three years, and Director Shu’s vitality is still very tenacious. When Director Shu was sick, I went to the hospital for a few times, but he didn't know me anymore. However, Teacher Yu Bin said that Director Shu would also write on her hands with his fingers, but he was in a state of drowsiness for a long time.

Shuxiang: Why is it serious again this time?
Ji Lei: About half a month ago, his skin seemed to be allergic, and there were many red spots. He had been doing dialysis before. A week ago, the doctor said that Director Shu’s indicators were not good, and he also invited the doctor from Union Hospital to conduct consultation. Yesterday (April 20) morning, Teacher Yu Bin called to report critically ill. I also rushed to the hospital yesterday afternoon. Although he was stable at that time, the overall situation was still not optimistic. I received a message at around 2 pm today (April 21) and went to the morgue of Tongren Hospital to handle the procedures for Director Shu. Tomorrow, Director Shu's family went to Babaoshan to handle the farewell ceremony for him, and determined the specific time and related matters of the farewell ceremony.
Shuxiang: Did Director Shu have any wishes before his death?
Ji Lei: has not been discussed, because I spent most of the day yesterday and found clothes for Director Shu from Andingmen , so I didn’t say much. Teacher Yu Bin was very sad and cried all the way, and today she kept crying.
Shuxiang: Mr. Shu Yi was the director of the China Modern Literature Museum. What work did he do when he was in the Literature Museum?
Ji Lei: Director Shu was transferred to the China Modern Literature Museum very early. In 1984, he participated in the preparation of the China Modern Literature Museum. He used to be a student who stayed in the Soviet Union and studied forestry chemistry. Later, he went to work as an engineer at Guanghua Wood Factory in Beijing. The Literature Museum was opened in 1985. He was the first staff member and later served as deputy director, executive deputy director and director.
Shuxiang: What kind of design does Mr. Shu Yi have in the construction of the new Chinese Modern Literature Museum?
Jilei: He spent all his thoughts on the construction of the new museum. Yesterday, I also told Teacher Yu Bin that the Literature Museum was moved from the old museum to the new museum of Shaoyaoju now. It was really created by Director Shu. Many people who have been here think that the gardens of the Literature Museum now have a literary atmosphere, such as erecting sculptures by more than a dozen writers. At that time, Director Shu gave all the works of the writers to the sculptors. He said: I will give you three years. You can read their works carefully and figure out the personal style and personality of the writer. I don’t like the standard and rigid image of the writer. We must express the deep charm of the writer.

Literary Museum New Library
Shuxiang: Are there any things that impressed you?
Ji Lei: He took the sculptor Li Xiangqun to Shanghai to visit Ba Lao (Ba Jin), and he said: Do you know what Ba Lao is like in normal times? One of the things that Mr. Ba likes the most is to take a walk in the yard after reading, lowering his head slightly with his hands behind his back, as if he was thinking all the way. Later, there was a statue of a contemplative figure of Mr. Ba Jin in the courtyard of the Literature Museum. After the statue came out, both the literary circle and the relatives of Ba Lao liked this statue very much. This creativity was actually proposed by Director Shu. There is also a statue of Zhao Shuli in the yard of the Literature Museum. Director Shu suggested at that time that we should not be the stern Zhao Shuli. Although Zhao Shuli is a literati, he has the simple atmosphere of a farmer, so he conceived a scene: Zhao Shuli bent over in front, lowered his head, and a pen inserted in his pocket of clothes, and a donkey behind him. On the donkey was sitting was the heroine of "Xiao Erhei's Marriage".
Shuxiang: What are Mr. Shu Yi’s hobbies?
Ji Lei: He is quite talented. I remember it was in 1995. He started painting and held many art exhibitions. The staff in our museum celebrated their birthdays. Director Shu said, "Whoever celebrates his birthday, I will give him a painting."

Shu Yi's paintings
Shuxiang: Did you receive the paintings sent by him?
Jilei: has it, I have to pass his paintings.
Shuxiang: What kind of person do you think of Mr. Shu Yi during his dating?
Ji Lei: He is very funny, has a very good eloquence, and speaks very touching.
Shuxiang: What other library ideas do Mr. Shu Yi have?
Ji Lei: When I went out to hold an exhibition with him in the past, he told me that the Literature Museum should expand its influence, publicize writers, and meet them every month, so he held many exhibitions of writers. He has held many life creation exhibitions for writers, such as Ba Jin's Art Exhibition, Ba Jin's Life Creation Exhibition, Ba Jin's Friendship Exhibition with Bing Xin , and for example, the exhibitions for writers such as Ding Ling , Shen Congwen , Sun Li , etc. were all held together when Director Shu was in office. Director Shu has to write the foreword for each exhibition himself. Director Shu sometimes serves as a tour guide when guests visit. He was very energetic, as if he always had enthusiasm and could not finish his energy.
