Recently, Guitar China conducted an exclusive interview with Mayday guitarist stone , listening to Stone "talk" guitar:
What kind of opportunity did you start playing guitar?
Playing guitar should have originated from the fact that when I just graduated from China Middle School, I heard the music of The Doors by chance, and I was instantly attracted by their charm on the stage. It happened that the famous director Oliver Stone also filmed a biographical movie for The Doors. At that time, I felt that the form of band and rock music could allow people on and off the stage to enter another space, sweat and roar together, so I had the idea of becoming a member of the band in my mind. So after graduating from China High School and entering the Affiliated High School of Normal University, I wanted to learn a musical instrument. However, because there was no special group for electric guitar at that time, but the acoustic guitar club also had similar organization, so I started learning guitar like this.
Have you encountered difficulties when you started learning guitar?
actually had many difficulties at the beginning. Because I am not a professional, I couldn’t read the five-line score smoothly at the beginning, I could only read the simple score and six-line score . The first difficulty may be that the fingers hurt because they play for too long; the second is the cooperation with the band, because when we first started playing with the band, we could only focus on ourselves and not hear others; the third is that when we started to try to create something new, we would add some impromptu paragraphs to some existing songs, and in these impromptu paragraphs we found the fun of creation, so we tried to create songs ourselves. In fact, for music, whenever you solve a difficulty, there will be a new difficulty waiting for you.
Who is the most influenced in creation and performance? Favorite musician?
I really like the way the U2 band guitarist The Edge plays. He has created many new playing techniques, such as the progress of song harmony, the use of effect and his just right performance can make you feel the flow of music. In terms of playing, he made the traditional instrument of guitar sound very different, such as imitating the effects of synthesizers, etc. His ideas and concepts have had a great influence on me. Another one is David Gilmour, a guitarist of the band Pink Floyd. His recitation makes me feel very quiet and makes me feel that he is traveling through the sea and rivers. His notes are very smooth.
What are the commonly used guitars, effects, speakers and other hardware devices? Can you share some experience in using the device
The guitar I use the most is Fender Stratocaster. For me, the Stratocaster is very adjustable, which can be bright and low, and just right. In addition, its quality is very reliable. For people who go out for performances or travel, the most worrying thing is that the guitar will be damaged, such as a broken neck, etc., but Fender is very reliable in guitar design and quality. If I travel by myself, I will definitely choose the Fender guitar. In terms of
effect device, I used digital series devices. In recent years, digital effects have made great progress, both convenient and stable. I am a person who is very picky about tone. If the tone of each performance is different, then my mind will keep thinking about how to debug and can't concentrate on playing. In the early days, I also used single-piece effects and vacuum tube speakers, but after several large concerts, I found that they would change with many factors, such as air humidity, venue voltage, etc., and these factors would have an impact on my performance, so I chose a more stable digital system.
You have always been a loyal Fender user. How do you understand and define the brand Fender?
Fender is not only a musical instrument, but also a musical culture. I have been to the Fender factory in the United States, and in their showrooms you can see the relationship between Fender guitars and pop music from the 1950s and 1960s until now, including those used by well-known guitarists. After watching it, you will find that Fender and rock music are actually inseparable. In addition, Fedner is also a brand that pays great attention to listening to users' usage experiences, and has been like this since its founder Leo Fender. For me, Fender is not about letting you adapt to the brand, but about really taking into account the user's feelings, which can be seen from Fender's extensive guitar series. In general, Fender's tone is very diverse and its appearance is very recognizable. These are the reasons why I admire Fender very much.
What kind of way does Mayday create? How should I participate as a guitarist?
When Mayday just started, we will choose to create together in the rehearsal room, starting with a chord and a motivation. Slowly, everyone's equipment is getting better, so try to start creating with a computer at home. Now, everyone will first record their ideas on the computer at home, including basic drums, guitar, bass , piano and melody, and then take them to the rehearsal room to discuss, cooperate and modify them. As a guitarist, what I am most accustomed to is guitar, so I will focus on guitar when creating.
Mayday's music is relatively mild, which is very different from the rock music that many people think of. Therefore, many people say that Mayday is not rock enough. What do you think about this?
I think the boundaries of rock music are very blurred now. It can't be said that the kind of guitar, what kind of speaker, or how much distortion it is, it's rock music. For example, Bob Dylan's early music could be regarded as a folk singer. Although he later added some country and electric guitar elements, he was indeed a representative of rock music. So we cannot use a certain instrument to define rock music. What is important is the mentality, the perspective of the world, the perspective of the world, and what you want to say. I don’t think that music can be framed with a framework. Many modern music will also incorporate some more traditional classical music factors. So will modern music become classical music? We are moving towards a musical perspective. We do not frame ourselves in rock music. We are purely for music.
