Soochow University was predecessored by Soochow University (Soochow University , founded in 1900). It set a precedent for modern higher education and integrates the essence of Chinese and Western cultures. It is the earliest university in China to be organized with a modern university discipline system.
In the history of Chinese higher education, Soochow University was the first to carry out postgraduate education and awarded a master's degree, and first to carry out professional education in law (English and American law). It is also the first university to establish a journal.
In 1952, the departments of mainland China were adjusted, and the Jiangsu Normal University was merged to form the Jiangsu Normal University Normal University, and the Jiangsu Normal University Department of Arts and Sciences, the Jiangsu Normal University, and the Jiangsu Normal University Department of Mathematics and Sciences was renamed Jiangsu Normal University in the same year.
