The Three Kingdoms Good Generals Series Gan Ning (Part 1)
Wine-making discussion on heroes, and talk about the characters of the Three Kingdoms.
When talking about the generals of the Eastern Wu during the Three Kingdoms period, people are more interested in talking about Zhou Yu , Lusu , Luxun and other wise generals who use strategic planning and overall planning. In terms of martial arts, not many people can compete with the famous generals of Wei and Shu in terms of popularity. Gan Ning is the first among the twelve tiger ministers on Jiangbiao. This issue will tell the story of this legendary general of the Eastern Wu.
Ganning (birth and death year unknown), whose courtesy name is Xingba , was from Linjiang, Bajun (now Zhong County, Chongqing). Gan Ning was a hero when she was young, and organized a group of bad boys of similar age to become the "Qu Shuai" by himself. The group of people swayed through the city with bows and crossbows, tying bird feathers on their heads, and tied bells on their waists. When the people heard the bell ringing, they knew that Gan Ning was coming. The so-called heroes and gossips, at that time, you could think they were chivalrous and righteous knights, or you could think they were gangsters. In short, these people acted flamboyantly and were not easy to provoke.
One of the major events in Ganning - the origin of "Jinfan Thief",
As the leader of the group, Ganning was bound to take his brothers to fight and fight. The ancient people were fierce and would cause deaths at any time. Later, for some reason, Gan Ning also committed a murder case. At first, he hid from Tibet to avoid the limelight, but later he returned to the world, and his power was circulated in the entire county.
According to the notes of Pei Songzhi of " Three Kingdoms ·Biography of Gan Ning", "When he goes in and out, he walks in a carriage, and when the water is connected to a light boat, his servants are embroidered, and when the light boats are often protected by brocades, and when he goes, he often uses brocades to protect the boats, and when he goes, he shows luxury." This passage says that when Gan Ning appears again, there are carriages and horses escorts on the road, and when the water is followed, his servants are dressed in bright and gorgeous clothes, and wherever they go, they are filled with brides. I used brocade to tie the boat, and cut it with a knife when I drove the boat, which showed that I was rich. Does reading
make you feel confused and unreasonable?
is right. Whether it is "The Three Kingdoms" or "The Book of Wu", the reasons for Gan Ning's murder and the reasons for getting rich are vague. Historical materials say that Gan Ning's ancestors were Gan Mao, the prime minister of Qin during the Warring States Period. Whether such a long time can be trusted is not the case. Historical materials do not mention Gan Ning's father, which shows that he was born in a poor family.
Gan Ning, the leader of a poor family, was not punished after killing people, but suddenly became very rich. The most likely thing is that Gan Ning was bought and became an assassin. The people who bought Gan Ning must have a high status, otherwise no matter how frivolous Gan Ning is, he would not be so arrogant. In the Dianwei chapter, I have also introduced that these rangers with high martial arts skills and poor backgrounds usually turn to big names as disciples, so the author believes that Gan Ning is also one of the disciples, but it is just assassination is not glorious, so the historical materials do not leave who the main messenger behind Gan Ning is left behind.
It’s nothing but money. Even local officials in surrounding cities began to make friends with Gan Ning. The "Biography of Gan Ning" records that "when the officials of the city are in charge, the people who are generous in reception will have a good time. If you don’t, you will release the money you will take away." This passage says that Gan Ning’s interactions with officials also depend on whether the other party gives him enough etiquette and snatches property if he is slighted.
Did you shock your chin? After Gan Ning killed someone, not only did he suddenly get a lot of money, but local officials also had to receive grandly. Gan Ning also had to steal other people's things. This has been upgraded from a gangster to a bandit gang. Gan Ning's misconduct was getting bigger and bigger. No one dared to mess with him. There must be hidden information in this.
When it comes to "Jinfan Thief", the author has not recorded it after searching all historical materials. This title is indeed from "Romance of the Three Kingdoms", not official history. If you think about it carefully, Shu is in the upper reaches of Yangtze River , and the water transportation is far less developed than Jingzhou and Yangzhou . Large-scale pirates or river thieves have no room for existence. Moreover, historical books clearly record that Gan Ning used brocade to tie the boat, not using brocade to make sails. This is not because there is not enough money. It is because brocade to make sails is too practical. Therefore, in Ganning, bells, brocades, and murders are all true in history, but there is no title of Jinfan thief.
Major events in Ganning - abandoning bandits and entering politics, defeating Jingzhou
Being a bandit in Linjiang until he was in his early twenties, Ganning realized that he could not live such a life again. He stopped robbing and began to study hard and recharge himself. Perhaps there is a saying that fate is really true. If Gan Ning did not change his mind and did not study, and still became his bully, he would not become a legendary general in the future.
I don’t know if it is related to the big guy behind Gan Ning. Once you study hard and have some culture, you will soon be an official. Gan Ning was named a planner, which was to help the county magistrate conduct statistics and inspections in household registration, finance and other aspects. It is obviously not in line with his temperament to let Gan Ning do this secretarial work. It turns out that this is just a springboard. Gan Ning was soon transferred to Shu County to be the county magistrate .
I wonder if readers feel this way: Gan Ning wants to study, he will be an official and be promoted quickly. If he changes his way of thinking, would anyone ask Gan Ning to study and enter the official career? Otherwise, how could Gan Ning be so successful as the county magistrate? There is no hidden truth in this, I am afraid it will not make sense. When there was no imperial examination system, if there was no suitable opportunity and no one would recommend it, even if Gan Ning was well-read in poetry and books, he would not be able to become an official.
As for the person behind the scenes who instructed Gan Ning to kill and guide him into his career, the author cannot determine who he was, but can only determine that he was a powerful figure in Yizhou.
In the first year of Xingping (194), Liu Yan died of illness, and his son Liu Zhang took over Yizhou. Unlike the cruel and ruthless Liu Yan, Liu Zhang was generous and lacked prestige, and his power fell into the hands of Zhao Wei, the former subordinate of Liu Yan. The local factions that were previously strongly suppressed by Liu Yan raised troops to resist, and Gan Ning also participated.
Yizhou officials Shen Mi, Lou Fa, Gan Ning conspired with Liu He, a separate leader of Jingzhou, to raise an army to attack Liu Zhang, but was defeated by Zhao Wei, and Gan Ning and others fled to Jingzhou.
We know that Jingzhou Mu Liu Biao likes to make friends with famous scholars. Liu Biao, a person who is full of ruffians, looks down on him. He used Gan Ning and others to seek Yizhou. Since the value of utilization is gone, it will naturally be cold. According to the "Book of Wu", when Gan Ning left Shu County, he brought about 800 disciples and subordinates. Gan Ning discovered that Liu Biao was a civil servant, did not understand military affairs, and did not have the ambition to raise an army in troubled times. Gan Ning believed that following Liu Biao would do nothing and would sooner or later collapse, so he planned to continue to go east and go to Jiangdong.
Ganning walked to Jiangxia territory, and two more versions appeared here. "The Biography of Gan Ning" records that "later sent to Huang Zu , and the ancestors also used mortals to rush to mortals." This means that Gan Ning joined Huang Zu, but he was not valued, but was just given very ordinary treatment. As for how ordinary it is, it is unknown. According to the "Book of Wu", "Huang Zu was in Xiakou , and the army could not pass, so he stayed with the ancestor. In three years, the ancestor did not respect him." According to this version, Gan Ning was intercepted by Huang Zu in Xiakou, and he had no choice but to serve Huang Zu. In the past three years, Huang Zu did not use Gan Ning.
Since Gan Ning was leading a team of 800 people, Huang Zu naturally could not let him join Jiangdong, which was in a hostile relationship. This is understandable. But Huang Zu kept Gan Ning and was wary of it, and did not dare to reuse it, which made Gan Ning depressed and unsuccessful. Gan Ning is also constantly observing the situation and choosing a good master. Gan Ning knew that only by following the right people in troubled times can he have a future and development. From Chengdu to Nanyang , from Nanyang to Jiangxia, and later to Jiangdong, Gan Ning has been looking for people worthy of his loyalty.
Major events in Ganning - to Jiangdong
In the eighth year of Jian'an (203), Sun Quan attacked Jiangxia. Huang Zu lost to Sun Quan and was defeated, and Sun Quan's army chased him closely behind. At the critical moment, Gan Ning rushed from behind to pick him up, and Zhang Gong took an arrow to aim at a general on the opposite side and shot him. Gan Ning had excellent shooting skills, and the general of Sun Quanjun was immediately caught in an arrow and fell into a horse and died. You may have guessed that this person will be Ling Cao, the father of Lingtong, . Later, the author will also tell the story that Ling Tong and Gan Ning have to tell, but it is still early.
And Sun Quan's army won for a while, but fire broke out in the rear of Jiangdong. Rebellion in Shanyue started, and Sun Quan had to lead the army back to rescue. Huang Zu retreated to the camp and knew that Gan Ning had saved him, but he still did not let go of his guard and used it. He still treated Gan Ning lukewarmly as usual.
The general under Huang Zu's tent Su Fei admires Gan Ning's courage and often recommends it in front of Huang Zu. But Huang Zu just didn't like Gan Ning, and he was even more unhappy when he saw that his subordinate governor Su Fei began to praise Gan Ning. When Gan Ning came to Jiangxia, he brought 800 Yizhou soldiers. Huang Zu actually sent someone to secretly contact them and lured Gan Ning's disciples and soldiers to leave Gan Ning.
Gan Ning noticed it and planned to find an opportunity to leave, but was afraid that Huang Zu would not let him go. He felt that Huang Zu was monitoring his eyes. He was depressed every day and didn't know where the way out. Su Fei knew Gan Ning’s thoughts, so he held a banquet to entertain Gan Ning. During the meal, he said to Gan Ning: "Brother, I recommend you several times to the boss, but he just doesn’t need you. As the saying goes, time is like an arrow, life is short, I would like to advise you, it’s better to leave here as soon as possible and find a wise master who truly understands you!"
Su Fei is Huang Zu’s most trustworthy general. Gan Ning was really not sure whether it was a heartfelt word or a clue to his words. After being silent for a long time, Gan Ning decided to take a gamble and believe in Su Fei. Gan Ning replied: "I'm not hiding it from my brother, I do have this idea, I just have no chance to leave."
Su Fei decided to do a good person to the end and pointed out a clear way for Gan Ning: "I plan to recommend you to be the county magistrate of Zhu County. Brothers, you can arrange the next thing flexibly, right?" Gan Ning thanked Su Fei for his gratitude.
I don’t know how Su Fei told Huang Zu, but Huang Zu really sent Gan Ning to Zhu County to take office. After Gan Ning took office, he recruited the already separated Yizhou soldiers and local soldiers who were willing to follow him, and obtained a unit of hundreds of people.
Gan Ning took this army to Jiangdong and finally found a platform to display his talents. Although he was an opponent who had once met each other, Jiangdong was full of vitality at this time, and a large number of young talents emerged. Under the joint recommendation of Zhou Yu and Lu Meng , Sun Quan entrusted Gan Ning to value it, and treated Gan Ning with no difference at all.

The fourth major event in Ganning - discussing attack on Jiangxia, and repaying kindness
Apr 2018 (208), Sun Quan held a meeting to discuss whether to attack Jiangxia again. Just a few months ago, Sun Quan sent troops to attack Jiangxia, but because his mother was critically ill, the war was left unresolved. Just after winter, Sun Quan was preparing to use his troops again and held a meeting to solicit opinions from the ministers.
Gan Ning made an analysis: "Now that the Han Dynasty is in decline, and the stronger the Cao Cao is, I am afraid it will be replaced in the end. In Jingzhou, there are mountains, rivers and hills that are conducive to defense, and rivers are connected to us and the transportation is convenient. We should give priority to developing here. According to my personal experience, Liu Biao lacks long-term plans, and his son is not a good person, which is much worse than Liu Biao. He is not a person who can inherit the foundation of Jingzhou. The lord should make plans earlier and cannot fall behind Cao Cao in Jingzhou. Picture of Jingzhou, the first thing to do is to do is to take To defeat Huang Zu, who guarded Jiangxia. Huang Zu is now in high spirits and is old and stupid. Now he is short of money and food. His confidants deceive superiors and subordinates, and are only concerned about making money and have no intention of military affairs. The officials and people complain about Huang Zu. The Jiangxia naval warships were broken and the old were not repaired, the military discipline was loose, and the combat power was not as good as before. If the lord personally conquers Huang Zu, he will definitely be able to completely defeat Huang Zu. Then he will move westward and occupy Jingzhou. After his strength is further strengthened, he will continue to expand to Bashu."
Gan Ning's words were clear and well-argued, which made Sun Quan feel excited. Since Gan Ning had many years of contact with Liu Biao and Huang Zu, he undoubtedly had the most say in Jingzhou affairs.
Of course, some people think that this is the Ganning version of the two-part world strategic plan, which is comparable to the strategic plan of Zhou Yu and Lu Su, which is also inappropriate. If Gan Ning didn't read the last sentence of Bashu, it was actually just about providing theoretical support to capture Jiangxia, and there was no question about the strategic direction of the entire group. Of course, this statement itself is wonderful.
At that time, the chief adviser of Jiangdong Zhang Zhao was also present. When he heard Gan Ning’s words, he immediately expressed his opposition: “Now Wu is still unstable. If the army marched westward, there would be chaos in the rear."
Gan Ning responded quickly: "The country entrusted to you with the important task of Xiao He. You are already responsible for guarding the rear, but you are worried about turmoil. What else can you compare with the ancients? "
Gan Ning means that it is Zhang Zhao's responsibility to ensure stability in the rear. Zhang Zhao is in this position but is worried. Either he is not capable enough to take on this important task, or his mentality is problematic. The author said off topic: It was already 208, and it was the year when the Battle of Chibi broke out. Cao Cao was ready to attack Liu Biao, so Zhang Zhao should have already started to consider the possibility of surrender and recruitment.
Gan Ning's subtext made Zhang Zhao very embarrassed. Seeing this, Sun Quan hurried out to smooth things over, raised his glass of wine and said, "Xingba, I have decided to go to Jiangxia this year, just like this glass of wine toast you, I would like to give you this war. If you want to carefully formulate a combat plan, you must take down Huang Zu. If you have such a chance to make contributions, why are you talking to Zhang Changshi for a while? "
Soon after, Sun Quan sent elite troops to fight Huang Zu. Huang Zu fought to the death, and the battle was fierce. Under the charge of Ling Tong and Dong Xi , Sun Quan's army finally won, Huang Zu was beheaded, and Sun Quan captured a large number of soldiers. For more detailed plots of this battle, please refer to Dong Xi.
Later that day, Sun Quan summoned the generals to celebrate the celebration banquet. Gan Ning stood up and left the seat, knelt down and kowtowed to Sun Quan. He kowtowed until his head broke his blood, and blood and tears flowed across his face, and then he began to speak: "Su Fei was kind to me in the past. If it weren't for Su Fei, I, Gan Ning, would have long no idea which gully I died in and there was no chance to serve the lord. Su Fei should be executed for his crime, but I still took the liberty to beg the general for his life. "
Sun Quan was very moved to see this, and Huang Zu was dead, and he was revenge, so he used Su Fei to sell favors to Gan Ning and asked Gan Ning, "I let Su Fei go for you today. What if he escapes? "
Gan Ning answered firmly: "If Su Fei does not die, the general will be reborn for him. Even if he drives him away, he will not be able to drive him away. How could he escape? If he ran away, put my head in the wooden box instead of his. "
Sun Quan saw that Gan Ning valued love so much, he immediately ordered the release of Su Fei.
Gan Ning had been a bandit bully before, used to kill people, participated in the rebellion against Liu Zhang, was ignored by Liu Biao, and was monitored by Huang Zu. It was not until he met Su Fei that he was able to defect to Dongwu. Su Fei violated Huang Zu in order to help Gan Ning escape, and Gan Ning used his life to save Su Fei. To be able to do so, the two of them can indeed be called confidants.
The next issue will continue to tell you the deeds of this Jiangdong general.
