In the early days of the founding of the People's Republic of China, Chen Geng served as commander of the Yunnan Military Region, and later served as commander of the Third Corps of the Volunteer Army to fight in Korea. After returning to China, he served as deputy chief of staff and was awarded the rank of general in 1955. He then served as Deputy Chief of Staff of the People's Liberation Army and Deputy Minister of National Defense. He died of illness on March 16, 1961.
