Recently, the British magazine "Economist" compared pigs and Chinese people in an article about the fact that more food in the world is eaten by livestock rather than people, saying that "pigs eat more than Chinese people." This incident quickly aroused dissatisfaction among a large number of Chinese netizens, believing that it was a racist comparison. Chen Weihua, president of the European branch of " China Daily ", even angrily denounced that the operator of "Economist" is a pig, a group of "racist pigs".
Then, facing the questioning of the reporter of the English version of " Global Times ", the Economist magazine responded, saying that the reason why he chose Chinese people and pigs to compare was to highlight that pigs eat much more than people, and on the other hand, it was because "China is the country that eats the most rice and wheat among all countries in reality." However, after this comparison aroused the questioning of Chinese readers, they had changed the relevant statement, "Our original intention was not to cause offense."
At present, The Economist has deleted the part of its article that compares pigs and Chinese people, and added a "clarification" paragraph at the end of the article, saying that it made such a comparison before just because China is the country that consumes the most rice and wheat in the world. But the clarification did not mention the matter that caused controversy among the Chinese.
