IT House News on May 5, Canalys’ latest report shows the sales performance of PCs, tablets and Chromebooks in the first quarter of 2022. Although compared to the first quarter of 2021, PC and tablet sales fell 3% to 118.1 million units. but compared with before the arrival of the new crown epidemic, shipments are still strong . The three-year CAGR (compound annual growth rate) from Q1 2019 is 12%. Of course, that doesn't include Chromebooks, whose global shipments fell a whopping 60% year-over-year in the first quarter of 2022.
Apple dominates global tablet sales , with shipments of 14.88 million units, down 2% year-on-year, and a market share of 38.2%. Samsung ranked second with shipments of 7.86 million units and a market share of 20.4%. Amazon took the third place that previously belonged to Lenovo with shipments of 3.57 million units. Amazon's tablet shipments grew 3.3% year-over-year due to heavy discounts on its Fire tablets. Lenovo ranked fourth with shipments of about 3 million units, but shipments were down 20% from last year's first quarter. Huawei claimed fifth place with 1.68 million units shipped, accounting for 4.4% of the market.
In the first quarter of 2022, global Chromebook shipments were 4.9 million units. Chromebook shipments were extremely high last year because many students purchased cheap Chromebooks for remote online learning at home. In the first quarter of this year, the market was close to saturation, resulting in a sharp decline in Chromebook shipments. Canalys noted that North America accounts for 72% of global Chromebook shipments, and Chromebook shipments in this market fell by 64% in the first quarter of 2022.
Despite a 62% decline in Chromebook shipments, Lenovo still managed to ship 1.22 million Chromebooks worldwide and held the lead with a 24.9% market share. Acer and Dell ranked second and third with market shares of 23.1% and 17.9% respectively, with Acer shipping 1.13 million units and Dell shipping 876,000 units. HP's shipments declined most significantly, down 82% from the first quarter of 2021, capturing 15.8% share with 775,000 units. Asus shipped 460,000 units and had a market share of 9.5%. However, all Chromebook brands saw declines this quarter. Acer was down 20.9%, Dell was down 12.8%, Asus was down 47.7%, and HP had the worst drop at 82%.
Looking ahead, supply chain pressure on the global tablet and PC markets will increase due to the Russia-Ukraine war and China's COVID-19-related blockade. Demand for Chromebooks is expected to rise in Asia Pacific, with education deployments in the region expected to start catering to price-sensitive users. These growing education markets are finalizing digitization plans, which will drive more Chromebook sales. In addition, IT House learned that Indonesia has started an initiative to locally produce Chromebooks for domestic education and export.
