Waiting Pavilion - Dual-sidedness of Station Function Perception

Located in the windy city of Hsinchu, Jiaotong University is a comprehensive higher education institution that brings together many young students. College students and graduate students from all over Taiwan, most of them come from other places on large buses. Entering the campus, for every Jiaotong University traveler, the bus shelter has a special meaning. It is an important stop on the road to study and a unique scenery in the memory of life. In recent years, new designs have been made for bus shelters on campus. With the school’s thinking of strengthening the aesthetic campus and subtractive aesthetics, the campus has been continuously beautified.

This bus shelter base is adjacent to the south gate of Jiaotong University. It is located at the edge corner of the campus, but it is also an important node connecting the inside and outside. For users, this bus shelter carries not only a simple waiting function, but also more important It is also rich in the emotions and expectations of Jiaotong University people for future lifestyle and life aesthetics.

Landscape Aesthetics - The platform design softens the elevation fluctuations

The bus shelter base is located in the south gate parking lot, close to the area where basketball courts and tennis courts gather. The empty parking lot and sports facilities are surrounded by the green space of the back mountain. The location Due to the terrain, the parking lot is divided into two, resulting in an elevation difference of 1.2 meters. Therefore, at the beginning of the planning, we decided to soften the visual and activity obstacles caused by the height difference through design techniques, and continue the symbiosis between the campus and the environment. With "landscape" thinking as the main design axis, and the "subtractive design" method, the architectural form is naturally formed in a way that conforms to the terrain, and different elevations are connected through design. Since there are many sports venues around the base and events are held from time to time, we use the concept of "platform" to connect different functions. The landscape-style semi-outdoor open design allows the bus shelter to carry more than just waiting functions. It adds opportunities for dialogue with surrounding activities and creates a multi-functional activity method that provides different functions, groups, and time periods.

Space construction - a composite interweaving of thickness and lightness

The structure of the landscape-style design is simply completed with a large roof plate and 29 slender columns. The thick planar block carries the users up the stairs. To match the weight of the earth covering the roof, in order to enhance the lightness of the building, the slender steel columns are arranged in a staggered structure, showing a contrasting lightness and spatial tension, and responding to the fibrous roots of the surrounding banyan trees to form the image of an artificial forest. This approach It also allows the entire building to be completely connected with the surrounding environment and hidden within it. There are no fixed seats in the bus shelter. We designed a series of platform panels of different heights based on the human scale to alleviate the height difference caused by the terrain. Users can sit, lie down, or squat in the space to wait. The roof of the bus shelter has also been greened and beautified. People can easily walk to the top, enjoy the shade under the trees, or lie on the rattan bed. They can lie on the slope to rest, watch football games, talk, and chat.
