Emperor Bao Dai was originally named Nguyen Phuc Vinh Thuy and was born in 1913. Nguyen Phuc Hoi was his name after he became emperor. At the age of 9, he sat on the throne of a country's crown prince. Soon after, he was sent to France alone at a young age, where he studied at the Lycée Condorcet in Paris and later studied politics at Sciences Po in Paris. He was always under the care of French people. 
It was not until 1925, when his father passed away, that Nguyen Phuc Vinh Thuy was able to return to the Hue Imperial City. At the beginning of the next year, Nguyen Phuc Vinh Thuy, who was only 12 years old, changed his name to Nguyen Phuc Ha according to royal tradition. He succeeded to the throne and proclaimed himself emperor, changed his name to Bao Dai, and became the thirteenth emperor of the Nguyen Dynasty, known as King Annan. But soon after, he returned to Paris to continue his unfinished studies, and the Annan court gave full power to a Catholic named Ruan Youbai. At that time, the Nguyen Dynasty court was occupied by French colonial forces. Not only was its sovereignty not guaranteed, the royal family actually existed in name only, and Nguyen Phuc Ho was a puppet on a string used by the French colonial forces to manipulate the Vietnamese government.
Seven years later, the 19-year-old Baoda finally returned to China. In just four days, he began to go to court and personally intervene in the government affairs of the court. Bao Dai, who had studied Western thought and returned to his country, was full of passion and ideals. He also saw that Japan, a small island country, was so powerful, so he also wanted to make Vietnam prosperous through reforms. But in fact, Baoda's emperor was in name only and could not make any decisions. The implementation of the reform plan stalled without the help of the French governor, and Baoda's several months of efforts eventually fell into disarray.
In 1945, with France's defeat in World War II and the fall of Paris, Japan took the opportunity to send troops to Vietnam, defeated France and replaced its colonial rule in Vietnam, and promoted the idea and idea of "Asia to Asians" to Baoda, inciting it to become independent. On March 11, Bao Dai read out the Declaration of Independence in front of hundreds of civil and military officials, royal family and nobles, and voided the previously signed Second Treaty of Hue, which had obvious colonial intentions. At the same time, it stated that it would seek win-win cooperation with Japan.
In June, Bao Dai unified other Vietnamese territories such as northern and central Vietnam and declared the establishment of the Vietnamese Empire, and the title became His Majesty the Emperor of Vietnam. However, in fact, this regime was controlled by Japan.
In August, Japan surrendered on all battlefields of World War II. On August 19, Hu led the Tongmenghui to seize the opportunity to seize the Hanoi , gradually control the domestic situation, and at the same time established a provisional revolutionary government to demonstrate Vietnam's independence. On the 23rd, he sent a letter to Bao Dai in Hue , informing him that the people's government had been established and asked him to abdicate to ensure the unity of the country. The Japanese envoy in Hue suggested sending Japanese troops to attack and win easily. But Baoda not only failed to adopt the Japanese suggestions, but also abolished the Japanese guards responsible for defending. He said: "I don't want foreign troops to kill my people."
Two days later, Bao Da issued an edict to the world to abdicate. At the end of August, he gave up his identity and name as emperor through an abdication ceremony at the Meridian Gate in the Imperial City of Hue, and adopted his original name. Soon, the Democratic Republic of Vietnam was established, and Bao Dai was the first citizen. Regarding this voluntary abdication, he had this saying: "I would like to be a citizen of an independent country, not a slave emperor." He called himself a citizen Yongrui.
In the spring of 1946, as the domestic situation became increasingly complex and his identity was sensitive, Baoda, with the help of Chiang Kai-shek , hid in Repulse Bay, Hong Kong and began his life in exile.
In 1949, the resurgent French colonial army tried to win over Baoda to restore its colonial rule. Baoda returned to China from Hong Kong in April after many dealings with France. Soon the provisional government of Vietnam was established in South Vietnam , and Bao Dai served as the head of state in name only. With the help of France, this government was recognized by many Western countries such as Britain and the United States. However, Baoda saw the situation very clearly. He said: "The so-called Baoda plan is just a French plan."
In 1954, France They were defeated in the Franco-Vietnamese War and retreated from Vietnam as agreed. Although Bao Dai was still the head of the Vietnamese government, he lost important support. Later, he appointed Ngo Dinh Diem as the first prime minister of Vietnam. But Diem was not a good minister and loyal general.
In 1955, the Americans encouraged Diem to push Bao Dai to the throne, so he instigated and organized a referendum on whether to depose Bao Dai from the throne. In the end, 98% of voters agreed to depose. Although the authenticity and accuracy of the vote were highly doubtful, Diem deposed Bao Dai. On the one hand, after occupying South Vietnam, he established the new Republic of Vietnam and served as president. On the other hand, Diem tried every means to obtain assistance from the United States.
The forty-two-year-old Baoda was forced to end his political career and once again began his overseas exile career. After moving around many places, he finally stayed in Paris, France to spend the rest of his life. At first, he recalled Ruyan's past and felt deeply regretful and regretful about what he had done. Gradually, he became less and less concerned about Vietnam's government affairs.
In 1977, Emperor Bao Dai died in Paris at the age of 63. He died in a military hospital and his ashes were not taken home but buried in a local cemetery. After the death of an emperor, he was not given a posthumous title, was not buried in an imperial mausoleum, and was not enshrined in a temple. But until his death, he continued to use the Baoda title.
Emperor Baoda had five concubines in his life and had five sons and six daughters. His first wife was Ruan Youlan, a Catholic who, like Baoda, had just returned from studying in France and was very beautiful. Four days after their marriage, he made an exception and named her queen. You must know that according to royal customs, a concubine can only be named queen after her husband's death. The two gave birth to two sons and three daughters.
Baoda's other official wife was a Frenchman whom he met when he was in exile in France, and she was called Princess Yongrui. After Baoda's death, she was granted the title of Empress Taifang. The other three are Concubine Feng Ying's cousin Hu, Hong Kong woman Huang Xiaolan and Vietnamese woman Pei Mengdie who has two sons and one daughter.
Although Bao Dai did not return to Vietnam in his later years and no longer participated in Vietnam's political situation, he also expressed concerns about foreign interference in politics at home and abroad, and once called on the people: "It is time to end this fratricidal war and restore the final peace."
