Zhongguancun Keyuan Community is less than one kilometer from Tsinghua University and Peking University , the house price is more than 100,000 yuan per square meter, and the North Fourth Ring Road is full of traffic.

Different from the surrounding hustle and bustle, under the mottled tree shadows, the old people in white vests in the Keyuan community shook their palm fans and sat around chatting together. Some people played chess, and some old people sat in wheelchairs, quietly watching the fitness equipment in the distance. Playful little kids. Occasionally, a postman with a green parcel on his back hurried past a cedar that was said to have been planted by Guo Moruo .

This cedar tree has seen people build a small garden in the open space in front of Building 13. Whenever spring comes, scientists living in the building take pictures together. Later, more and more people lived here, and it became a bicycle shed.

In the 1950s, in order to house famous scientists and scholars who returned from overseas, Buildings 13, 14 and 15 of Keyuan Community were built and later called "Special Buildings". Building 14, which is located in the middle, was the first to be built. Buildings 13 and 15 on the left and right are like the two wings of Building 14.

More than 40 founders of China's modern scientific undertakings once lived here, including 8 of the 23 winners of the "Two Bombs and One Star" Merit Medal.

"Two bombs and one star" Guo Yonghuai's family lives here. His wife Li Pei has been calling for the protection of the "special building" during his lifetime. At the age of 84, he made a special trip to the Chinese Academy of Sciences to talk to the leaders of the academy. Li Pei silently wrote down the names of the scientists living in the "special building" in front of the leaders of the institute.

"Two bombs and one star" Qian Sanqiang and his wife, Chinese Academy of Sciences academician He Zehui also lived here for decades. When she was in her 90s, someone suggested that she move to a better house, He Zehui said, "I won't go anywhere, unless I go to Babaoshan.

On June 21, the three buildings were announced as the first batch of historical buildings in Beijing.

Former Party Secretary of the Graduate School of the Chinese Academy of Sciences Yan Jiyi said: "The 'Tailou' is like a temple of Chinese science. "

"Western style"

Building No. 14 was first built in 1954.

This three-story gray brick building is now inconspicuous against the surrounding buildings. 14. The white around the numbers turns yellow and black. On the new building sign next to it, in addition to the building number, there are Chinese and English words "Zhongguancun".

The unified red wooden windows of each household in the building are divided into eight Small squares, in the midsummer, some people open these "small squares" to spend the summer, and the sound of broadcasting and cooking can be heard faintly from the house.

Qian Sanqiang's family, Room 203, Building 14, is the first one here. A group of residents, academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and biologist Bei Shizhang lived in room 204 opposite the door, and academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences Zhao Zhongyao lived downstairs. At that time, Qian Sanqiang's youngest son, Qian Sijin_ span3span is just 4 years old.

Today, the wooden door is still the same. There is a small window on the ginger wooden door, and below it hangs the words "Five Good Civilized Family" in yellow letters on a red background. The doormat at the door is The steel wire is tangled, and the fine dirt left by the feet of the visitors over the years has accumulated under it. Except for their son Qian Sijin who occasionally returns to stay for a while, room 203 is mostly empty.

After that, Building 13 and Building 15 of Keyuan Community were built one after another.

In 1956, Liu Gang, an academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and a physical chemist, and his family moved into Room 313, Building 15.

Liu Huaizu, Liu Gang's son, remembers that although each of the three buildings is equipped with three bedrooms, a living room, a study and a kitchen: "The kitchen has a large coal-burning stove, which is all covered with white tiles. A big iron pot with boiling water in the middle." But in a "luxurious" room, the partitions between the rooms are made of pampas grass and then plastered and whitened. Even if a child pushes a little harder, he can kick a small Hole.

In August of the same year, at the invitation of Qian Xuesen, Cornell University professor Guo Yonghuai and his wife Li Pei returned to Beijing with their daughter Guo Qin and lived in Room 204, Building 13. When we moved in, the house had some wooden furniture and a lot of bookshelves. Opening the window, they saw a tall tree.

Bian Dongzi, the author of "Dried Memories: Stories in the "Special Building" in Zhongguancun, said that the tree was planted by Qian Xuesen himself. In 1959, Bian Dongzi's family moved to the downstairs of Guo Yonghuai's house. He recalled that at that time, every household in the "special building" had a bathtub and could take a hot bath every day. In his opinion at the time, it was a very "luxury" thing.

In July 2019, a reporter from Beijing News saw outside 204, Building 13, that the light bulb at the door was covered by dust, and there was an old-fashioned black round light switch on the side of the door. The corners were damaged. Normal use. It wasn't long before Li Pei's residents moved in. The hostess told the Beijing News reporter that she had never heard of Li Pei, and she didn't know who lived in the opposite door.

But the "special building" at that time still had an unusual "foreign style".Bian Dongzi remembered that in the whole unit, all five houses except his family had pianos. In addition to the sound of the piano, we can occasionally hear the singing of Mrs. Wang Dezhao, Li Huinian, a vocal music professor, and Mrs. Qian Xuesen, who lives in Building 14, and singer Jiang Ying . These scientists are called "Mr.", they are sometimes called "Mr." to each other, and their wives are called "Mrs."

with the exception of He Zehui.

She never likes to be called "Mrs. Qian" by others. Even the invitation letter sent to her to go to the Great Hall of the People on National Day must say "Mr. He Zehui". Nowadays, when the old people of the Academy of Sciences mention her, they will respectfully call her "Mr. He".

After the establishment of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, Qian Sanqiang and He Zehui worked together at the Institute of Atomic Energy, with Qian Sanqiang as the director and He Zehui as the deputy director. Seven days a week, He Zehui stayed in the house for six days and returned to the "special building" on Sunday. Every morning, I go down to each office to see the progress of everyone's work at hand.

In the memory of his son Qian Sijin, his mother worked in the outer suburbs and could only go home on Sundays every week to reunite with the children. He heard his mother's voice, more often on the phone inside. There is a small blackboard hanging in the corridor of Room 203, Building 14, Keyuan Community, which has not changed for decades. Qian Sijin remembers that when the second sister, Qian Minxie, was in middle school, her mother would sometimes talk to her on the phone and analyze geometry problems with her. There were always various polygons and numbers on the small blackboard.

Sometimes both of them go home from their unit in the suburbs of Fangshan. Zhang Huanqiao, an academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences who has worked by He Zehui's side for a long time, remembers that Qian Sanqiang had a public car, but He Zehui never took it: "Mr. especially principled people,She said that it was a car sent to him by the government, and she couldn't take it, so she took the car back to Zhongguancun by herself every time.

Of the 23 "two bombs and one star veterans", 7 were directly recommended by Qian Sanqiang to the front line. Qian Sijin remembers that his father often travels on business, and often only a nanny takes care of a few brothers and sisters at home, living in the same building Zhao Zhongyao, who lives in the family, occasionally comes to the house to talk about work, and Qian and He Zun call him "Mr. Zhao" or "Mr. Zhao".

"I am too young to understand what they are talking about. I just remember that sometimes my father's voice was louder. "Qian Sijin recalled to a reporter from the Beijing News.

Liu Huaizu remembered that his father often traveled in the northwest for business trips to the inaccessible Salt Lake for research. Busy is the norm for scientists.

Bian Dongzi remembers: "Mr. Guo Yonghuai's figure Long and slender, no matter in spring, summer, autumn or winter, he likes to wear a peaked cap, with a leather bag tucked in his arms, head down, and stride between his work and home.

In comparison, children are more likely to meet Guo Yonghuai's wife, Li Pei, deputy director of the Western Suburbs Office of the Chinese Academy of Sciences. Li Pei recalled in his autobiography that he was in charge of a lot of things at that time, and the first thing he did was to find Police station: "People have moved in one after another, and they all have to apply for household registration, so they can come to Zhongguancun to work, so that the scientific research personnel will not run away.

At that time, there was no hospital around, so I often had to take the No. 32 bus to go out to see a doctor, and I often had to wait for an hour. "Two bombs and one star" Chen Fangyun 's father-in-law is a retired doctor, and Li Pei mobilized him to "go out" and set up a small infirmary. Liu Huaizu remembered that when he had a headache, he went to the infirmary to see him. Chen Fangyun's father-in-law, Dr. Shen, liked children and was very close to them.

The Zhongguancun refreshment department also opened at that time. Senior pastry chef Jing Dewang was in charge. The apple pie, crispy and cream cakes were all excellent.Among the elderly Beijingers, there are "Lao Mo's cakes, Xinqiao Sanbaole's bread and Zhongguancun's foreign desserts". Qian Sanqiang and other scientists are regular visitors here.

In July 2019, a reporter from the Beijing News visited the Zhongguancun refreshment department.

After a lapse of more than 60 years, the shelves and counters of the refreshment department maintain the old style. Weighing is done with scales, wooden abacuses are used for accounting, and even purchases can only be made in cash. The environment around

starts to improve. Bian Dongzi remembered that the garden in front of Building 13 was planted with double-petaled peach blossoms, which bloomed beautifully every spring; there was a nursery in front of Building 15. In front of Building 14 is a large and round flower bed, where Guo Moruo planted a cedar.

Now, this cedar has grown very strong, its broad branches hang down, forming a round shadow on the ground, surrounded by layers of rose flowers up.

"Nuclear King???"

The peach blossoms outside the building withered, and the children in the building "see the wind grow".

Bian Dongzi remembers that children like to play together. There are a lot of scrapped circuit boards and electronic components in the garbage thrown by the nearby Chinese Academy of Sciences Computing Institute. For them, it is a good material that cannot be bought, and they are often picked up to make semiconductor radios.

The children also read books instead. Bian Dongzi's neighbor, chemical engineer Guo Musun's family, has many books brought back from abroad. A set of color-printed popular science books published in the United States is very beautiful. There are all kinds of strange lizards and birds of various colors.

Qian Sanqiang and He Zehui like to buy books. The staff of the Keyuan Community Neighborhood Committee remembered that there were books everywhere from the kitchen to the bedroom.

In Qian Sanqiang's study, the huge dark bookshelves on the left and right sides are full of books. Qian Sijin's favorite is a set of "One Hundred Thousand Whys". There are also many villain books with comic strips. "It's just a little bigger than the palm of your hand. There are thin and thick ones, dozens of pages thick. My father also reads villains in his spare time." Qian Sijin said.

Buy books generously, but live frugally. Qian Sijin remembered that when he first went to kindergarten and elementary school, he sometimes wore the women's pants worn by his sisters, and his mother would change the side opening of the women's pants to the front opening. The table and chairs at home were broken, and He Zehui repaired it by herself. She advocated the use of waste, and she was reluctant to throw away anything that could be used. Bian Dongzi said that even now, walking into 203, Building 14, Keyuan Community, is still like entering an "old object showroom".

Once, Qian Sijin smashed the fish plate in half while washing the dishes: "My mother let me put it aside first, saying she would stick it with glue later. It broke into several pieces. My mother was very annoyed at the time, 'Don't eat fish in the future!'"

On October 16, 1964, China's first atomic bomb exploded. Today is Qian Sanqiang's 51st birthday.

There is no special ceremony in the "Telou" home, and Qian Sijin doesn't remember the excitement on his father's face. Just three days after the atomic bombing, Qian Sanqiang was sent to the countryside of Henan to participate in the "Four Qings".

In the "Special Building", the lights of some people's homes began to dim gradually.

In 1966, Qian Sanqiang's work unit firstly posted thousands of big-character posters criticizing his director. At home, Qian Sijin once saw the large-character poster excerpts and booklets mimeographed by his father. Zhang Huanqiao saw the same excerpt from the big-character poster on He Zehui's desk. Some people criticized her as a "nuclear bully." She circled the three words with a pen and put three red question marks behind them.

Bian Dongzi's family was also persecuted, and his mother was taken away. Li Pei often came to his house, chatted with his sick father, and proposed to find a way to rescue Bian Dongzi's mother. She also wrote to Bian Dongzi to comfort and encourage him.

"Mr. Li Pei is the one who brings warmth to our family during this special period. She is like a spring flower, giving people the hope that "the cold winter is about to leave, and the spring is coming". "Bian Dongzi said.

On December 5, 1968, Guo Yonghuai took the opportunity to return to Beijing and was killed when he landed. It was found that there were two charred bodies in close proximity. They hugged each other tightly, with a confidential briefcase in the middle. It was finally confirmed that this was Guo Yonghuai, 59, and his security guard, Mou Fangdong.

Li Pei sorted Guo Yonghuai's belongings bit by bit by himself, and did not let them in the whole process. No one intervenes. When relatives and friends visit, she is also very polite.

Bian Dongzi remembers that when he went upstairs with his father to visit Li Pei, Li Pei seemed very calm: "She said to my father, 'Wait all night, just started I thought it was because the plane was late, but when I saw people in military uniforms coming, I knew it was broken', I didn't cry or get excited during the whole process, just like I was talking about other people's affairs.

After Guo Yonghuai's death, Bian Dongzi often heard Guo Qin upstairs playing the Li Tiemei aria in " Red Lantern " on the piano: "My father is like a pines and cypresses with strong will.

Guo Yonghuai's ashes were buried under his sculpture at the Institute of Mechanics, Chinese Academy of Sciences, where he worked after returning home. 22 days after his death, China's first thermonuclear missile test was successful.

In the spring of the second year of Guo Yonghuai's death, Li Pei saw a tree that originally grew in front of Building 14. The spring flowers were planed out for some reason and left in the open space of the community.

She wanted Bian Dongzi to transplant the flowers in front of Building 13. Bian Dongzi readily agreed, and together with several other children in the yard, they planted the flowers Planted in the open space under Li Pei's window.

The flowers are planted,Li Pei stood on the balcony and watched, and said to Bian Dongzi calmly, "Lao Guo likes the spring flowers the most."

At the end of the 1960s, some changes took place in the "special building". Bian Dongzi recalled that the original family was divided into several houses, and there were "rebels" who lived in, and young researchers who came from the unit, and everyone shared the kitchen and bathroom: "It used to be used by the whole family, but now there are so many more all of a sudden. It is common for many people to line up to cook and to go to the toilet."

Qian Sanqiang and He Zehui were sent to work at the "May 7 Cadre School" in Heyang, Shaanxi Province.

In the morning exercise team, Qian Sanqiang ran with him. Once, Qian Sanqiang was driving cattle to grind wheat on the threshing floor. Suddenly, he found that the cow was about to poop with its tail raised. Because he could not find a tool for collecting manure, he caught the smelly cow dung with both hands and held it outside the threshing floor.

On March 20, 1970, Bennett's comet reached perihelion, visible in the predawn north-easterly sky.

He Zehui saw the comet with a long tail at 4:00 in the morning, and called Qian Sanqiang to look. After that, the two used rulers and protractors to record the time and location of the comet every morning at four o'clock.

It came to be known as one of the most beautiful comets of the 20th century.

Medal

After 1976, some scientists who lived in the "special building" left one after another.

Qian Sanqiang's family remains in Building 14 of Keyuan Community. Several of the children have grown up, and the lines on the wall used to record the heights of the three children have never changed. Time seems to stand still here.

The two famous figures are ordinary old people in the eyes of their children. Qian Sijin remembered that his father often told stories to his granddaughter for a while.Wait until she falls asleep before going about her own business. My father is often in the queue in front of the milk station, queuing up to get milk.

The house has not been redecorated, and people are still "not particular" as always. The staff of the Keyuan Community Neighborhood Committee came to the door once, and it was winter, and Qian Sanqiang opened the door for her wearing old-fashioned cotton pants with large crotch.

In 1992, Qian Sanqiang was hospitalized due to a heart attack. On June 28, Qian Sanqiang died at the age of 79.

In the bedroom of the "special building", there is a posthumous photo of Qian Sanqiang. The old chair in front of the desk stood where it was, and the cloth strips tied to the armrests were a little shiny. In the drawer, the wallet, ID, glasses and phone number book used by Qian Sanqiang have not been touched. "This is also a way for my mother to commemorate my father." Qian Sijin said.

A few years later, the grief of the death of a loved one came to Li Pei again. In 1996, Guo Qin, the daughter of Guo Yonghuai and Li Pei, died of illness in Beijing.

Li Pei, who is in her 80s, put away her daughter's childhood toys and books she had read, and said nothing more. It's just that when no one is there, she will hold the piano played by her daughter for a long time.

Li Pei donated most of Guo Yonghuai's relics to the Institute of Mechanics, Chinese Academy of Sciences. The red-brown door of Room 304 is still hung with the sign "Deputy Director Guo Yonghuai's Office". Lamps and stationery are placed on it, and coats are hung on the hangers. The window displays dictionaries, notepads, commemorative seals, as well as spectacles and watches blackened by the plane crash.

On the eve of the National Day in 1999, Qian Sanqiang and Guo Yonghuai were posthumously awarded the "Two Bombs and One Star Merit Medal", and 21 scientists including Zhao Jiuzhang , Qian Xuesen, Peng Huanwu , Chen Fangyun, etc.

85-year-old He Zehui and 84-year-old Peng Huanwu took the medal to Qian Sanqiang's tomb and read the late award speech to Qian Sanqiang. However, the dozen diaries that Qian Sanqiang lost in the 1960s and 1970s have never been returned, and He Zehui has been brooding.

A few years later, Li Peito's friend took Guo Yonghuai's medal to Hefei and donated it to the University of Science and Technology of China.

Left-behind

After the 1980s, Zhongguancun Science City has developed rapidly, and the surrounding buildings are taller than the other. In 2001, with the opening of the North Fourth Ring Road to traffic, the gate of the community became full of traffic, and there was gradually the sound of demolishing the "special building".

In the 21st century, He Zehui, Li Pei, and Bei Shizhang, three old people, still live in the "special building", and they are laughed at as the "nail households" of the Keyuan community.

In the eyes of the neighbors, He Zehui's waist was slightly bent, her silver hair was tied into a small wad at the back of her head, and the vertical and horizontal ravines left by time on her face, because of aging, her eyebrows and eyes drooped down. She has no shelves, and wears old clothes all year round. The blue double-breasted Lenin suit has faded to gray with the years.

At the age of 90, He Zehui often carried a one-shoulder schoolbag with several patches to go to work at the Institute of High Energy Physics, Chinese Academy of Sciences. Her classmate, "two bombs and one star" Wang Daheng wrote a poem to make fun of her: "In the early days of spring, I went to work with my schoolbag on my back. Please ask my aunt how old it is, 90-year-old is childlike."

Li Pei It's another way of doing things. Li Weige, her secretary, said that Li Pei pays attention to appearance. Every day she goes to class, she wears different clothes. Even when she is old, she gets up and grooms herself carefully. When her face is not good, she also applies foundation and asks others to paint her eyebrows.

Zhongguancun

On July 11, Li Weige, Li Pei's former secretary, was interviewed by a reporter from the Beijing News. Photo by Beijing News reporter Wang Fei

Life abroad has made Li Pei's eating habits very Western. She has always liked steak and fried potatoes. Neighbor Liu Lewen who lives in Building 15 is good at cooking Western food. Every time he cooks beef stew and steak, he will bring a copy to Li Pei who lives in Building 13.

Li Pei called for the protection of the "special building".

"The roots of the Chinese Academy of Sciences are here.Bian Dongzi recalled that Li Pei once emphasized the role of the "special building" during her lifetime, and she called for the preservation of the "special building" as a museum.

I have never left here. Yan Jiyi recalled that Li Pei once told him many times that the preservation of the "special building" is also the trace of Guo Yonghuai and Guo Qin's life.

Li Pei's friend Long Xinhua recalls, Li When Pei was 84 years old, he took a bus from Zhongguancun to the Chinese Academy of Sciences and asked the leaders of the institute to talk about the protection of the "special building". In the office, Li Pei silently wrote down the scientists living in the "special building" in front of him. Li Pei stopped writing and expressed her attitude in front of him, pointing out that the demolition of the special building was unreasonable and lacking in thought.

She also wrote many letters to appeal.

"No Forget the living environment in which they worked tirelessly and immersed themselves in books, so that young people in future generations can see the hard and simple entrepreneurial mood of their ancestors in the high-rise buildings. "Li Pei wrote this appeal letter word by word. Several old neighbors who have moved out of the "special building" signed their names, including "two bombs and one star", and a winner of the highest national science and technology award.

In Yan Jiyi's mind, the special building is like a temple of Chinese science It is a symbol of the scientific spirit and a material carrier, which embodies the scientists' spirit of serving the country.

For the protection of "special buildings", Ye Tanglin, executive vice president and professor of the Institute of Economic and Social Development of Megacities of Capital University of Economics and Business, suggested that in While protecting the main body of the building, the circuits, pipes, and heat in the building also need to be renovated and upgraded with the times, so as to prolong the life of the building and reduce potential safety hazards: "Do not move the main frame... let the people living in it also A livable feeling.

Ye Tanglin said that the purpose of protecting historical buildings is to leave a historical imprint, and in the final analysis, it is still to serve people.

He Zehui's temperament has not been flattened by twists and turns, but he is still as stubborn as ever.

At that time, he was the main responsible People have visited He Zehui many times,Because the room was too old, he once suggested He Zehui to move to a new home. He Zehui replied: "I'm used to living here, and I don't go anywhere. Unless I go to Babaoshan."

In the last few years, due to the decline of memory, He Zehui became quiet. She couldn't walk anymore, and liked to sit on a bench in the community, looking up at the white clouds in the sky.

In 2011, the "China's Marie Curie" passed away. Died at the age of 97.

"Position and background, pomp and pomp, and gorgeous packaging have no effect on Mr. He; from time to time, she will be like the little child who can't see the emperor's new clothes, and coldly speak out a truth that is out of place and penetrating. ." Li Tibei, an old colleague of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, wrote this sentence.

In the study room, Room 203, Building 14, Keyuan Community, next to Qian Sanqiang's posthumous photo is the posthumous photo of He Zehui in a golden frame. In the photo, the corners of her mouth rose slightly. Decades-old wooden floors creaked when someone came to pay their respects.

Li Pei became the last "stander".

In Liu Lewen's view, this "persistent" is very lonely.

Liu Lewen remembers that Li Pei's bedroom is connected to the study. She likes to stay at home and read books and newspapers. Occasionally, she will be led downstairs by the nanny for a walk.

Thinking of Li Pei being alone, after 2008, Liu Lewen invited Li Pei to his house twice for Chinese New Year, and Li Pei happily accepted the invitation to eat dumplings.

Li Weige recalled that a week before Li Pei died, Li Weige visited her in the hospital. According to Li Pei's request, Li Weige also brought a new eyebrow pencil.

On January 12, 2017, the day of Li Pei's death, Li Weige saw Li Pei for the last time. At that time, Li Pei heard her voice and wanted to open his eyes to say something, but he couldn't. She saw that Li Pei's eyes moved in the eyelids, and a few tears flowed from the sockets. Li Weige felt very uncomfortable, and was afraid of affecting Li Pei's mood, so he comforted a few words and left. Before leaving, she said in Li Pei's ear, "I will see you early tomorrow morning."

That night, Li Pei passed away at the age of 99.

Today's "special buildings" are still crowded.

Some rooms are occupied by the children and juniors of scientists,Occasionally, there will be bursts of piano sounds; some rooms have been turned into rental houses of several square meters, crowded with migrant workers with accents from all over the world; some rooms have been rented out and turned into training institutions, with colorful posters of children on the walls. s work.

The doors of Li Pei and He Zehui's house were locked for a long time, as if the time was also locked. Those who came to visit could not get in, and only left their name and time on the wall.

On June 21, 2019, the 890th day after Li Pei's death, the "Special Building" was announced as the first batch of historical buildings in Beijing.
