The underground stems are thick, yellowish-brown, with bud eyes, and the stems and leaves are clustered. The plant height is 80-150cm. The leaves are larger, mostly obovate-lanceolate, about 10-20cm long, dark green, with variable leaf shapes; the petioles are cylindrical, with membranous material cut transversely. The leaves are broadly heart-shaped at the base and tapered at the ends. spikes are terminal, 5-20cm long, with more than 200 florets densely packed, blue-purple with yellow spots, about 10mm in diameter, with 6 perianth lobes, nearly round. The fruit turns brown when mature; the seeds are oval, 1-2mm in diameter. The flowering and fruiting period is from May to October.
