This matter started in 1977. On the afternoon of September 22, 1977, Hua Guofeng, accompanied by Wu De, went to inspect the Red Star Chicken Farm and Experimental Pig Farm. At that time, this was a pilot farm for mechanized pig and chicken raising in Beijing, carrying the ardent expectations of the people. During the inspection, Hua Guofeng listened to the reports from the leaders of the chicken farm and the pig farm in the conference room. During the meeting, Hua Guofeng poured himself water from a thermos bottle and drank from a cup in the conference room. After the inspection, Hua Guofeng also wrote a special inscription, encouraging the staff to do a good job in mechanized pig and chicken raising to benefit the people.
After Hua Guofeng's inspection, "People's Daily" published an article on October 7, reporting on relevant matters. After that, many units organized personnel to go to Xing Chicken Farm and Experimental Pig Farm to study, especially to learn Hua Guofeng's instructions. In November 1978, the Second Department of the Central Party School also organized a group of students to study at pig farms and chicken farms. During the study process, they also saw the thermos bottles and cups used by Hua Guofeng during his last inspection in the conference room. However, the thermos bottles and cups were placed in special glass cabinets for people to visit.
Among the visiting students at that time, there was a man named Wang Liben. He had joined the New Fourth Army in his early years and experienced the Anti-Japanese War and the War of Liberation. At that time, he was serving as the deputy dean of Shanghai Second Medical College. During that period, Wang Liben happened to be studying at the Central Party School, so he had this visit and study experience.
After this visit and study, Wang Liben felt very uncomfortable. On December 29, he wrote a letter to Hua Guofeng. In this letter, Wang Liben, as an old party member, put forward some opinions to criticize Hua Guofeng. In summary, Wang Liben believed that it is not good to display things used by Hua Guofeng, such as cups and thermos bottles, in glass cabinets, and it can easily lead to negative effects and bad effects.
After receiving this letter of criticism, Hua Guofeng took this letter of criticism very seriously. He immediately wrote a letter to Lin Hujia, then the first secretary of the Beijing Municipal Party Committee. In the letter, Hua Guofeng asked Lin Hujia to send people to the pig farm to understand the situation and correct the behavior of "displaying his own used things."
After receiving Hua Guofeng's letter, Lin Hujia immediately arranged for personnel to go to the Red Star Chicken Farm. After explaining the situation, the leaders of the Red Star Chicken Farm did not agree to do this. The staff of the Beijing Municipal Party Committee continued to do their ideological work. After patient persuasion, they agreed to make corrections and remove the glass cabinets.
After that, Lin Hujia reported the matter to Hua Guofeng. Hua Guofeng was very pleased to learn that the Red Star Chicken Farm had removed the things he had used. On January 16, 1979, he personally wrote a reply to Wang Liben who reported the problem. In the letter, Hua Guofeng praised Wang Liben and encouraged him to continue to carry forward the fine traditions of our party.
On September 28, 1979, " Guangming Daily " headlined "This trend can last forever" on the front page, specifically reporting on Wang Liben's letter to Hua Guofeng. At the same time, it also pointed out that Hua Guofeng had done a good job for us in restoring and carrying forward the party's fine traditions.
