On October 1, 1949, Chairman Mao Zedong announced on the Tiananmen Gate Tower that "the Central People's Government of the People's Republic of China was established today." This is the cry for the Chinese people to stand up from now on, and it is the result of the arduous struggle of countless revolutionary ancestors.
The historical drama "Dawn in the East" tells the story of Shanghai as a microcosm and the unremitting efforts of people with lofty ideals to liberate the city and create a better future.

The play is adapted from the documentary literary work "Battle of Shanghai" by the late Shanghai Jiaotong UniversityProfessor Liu Tong. Six episodes have been broadcast so far. Characters appear one after another, and the curtain of history slowly opens. We might as well follow the series to relive the dawn of the Oriental Pearl Tower and the outstanding efforts made by people from all walks of life to rebuild Shanghai.
01 Sacrifice: The fall of "Li Bai" is a regret and a strength. "Dawn in the East" begins at the end of 1948. The Battle of Huaihai is about to usher in victory. On one side, Chen Yi and Liu Bocheng rush to Xibaipo to participate in the meeting to study the next step of crossing the river. On the other side, on the towers of Shanghai, revolutionaries stick to their beliefs and shout "Long live the Communist Party of China".

At the same time, Tian Guoli, the leader of the CCP's underground party intelligence team code-named "Nightingale," disguised himself as a woman and knocked on the door of Li Bai, the liaison officer of the CCP's underground party. He brought the Kuomintang's Jiang defense military deployment plan. This information is particularly important for the people of Shanghai who hope to break through the siege of white terror and usher in liberation.

Because of this, when the radio station continued to be searched, Li Bai ignored his personal safety and persisted until the last moment to send out the intelligence, and affectionately added, "The people of Shanghai are eagerly looking forward to liberation. Farewell, dear comrades."

These were his last words before being arrested. They were filled with reluctance and firm confidence.

As the prototype of the "Eternal Red Radio" character, Li Bai did exist in history. His original name was Li Chuhua. He was an excellent espionage officer and underground worker of the Chinese Communist Party. He joined the party at the age of 15 and began working in a secret radio station in Shanghai at the age of 27, using radio waves to build an "air bridge" between Shanghai and Yan'an. After
was arrested, Li Bai was tortured for half a year and secretly killed. He was only 39 years old when he died.

20 days after his sacrifice, Shanghai was declared liberated.
As a hero who fell before dawn, such departure is indeed regrettable and particularly touching. He was the epitome of those warriors who failed to see liberation and died with light in their eyes and full of hope.
They know that they may not be able to see the dawn, but millions of people in Shanghai will definitely see it. It is precisely because of their dedication regardless of personal safety that they inspired more revolutionary warriors to move forward bravely.

02 Choice: Inside and outside the siege, there are always sparks shining
When the city turns into a battlefield, the people left behind are not afraid, but only for a responsibility.
After Li Bai was arrested, Tian Guoli and others actively rescued him and persuaded his family to leave Shanghai to ensure safety. But Li Bai's wife Qiu Huiying , as his revolutionary partner, is willing to believe in the organization and continue to stick to it. This is not only true love in the world, but also revolutionary love.

Protecting his father Huang Yanpei When Huang Jingwu left Shanghai, it was not only his father who was sent away, but also the progressives of the Democratic Political Alliance, who are one of the forces that our party needs to unite.

Faced with a choice, Huang Jingwu chose to stay. He exchanged his perseverance for the smoothness of his revolutionary work, but he was inevitably arrested and killed.
Ordinary heroes like them all understand that sacrifice is necessary, and their predecessors have set an example. Perseverance is necessary, and peace requires faith and struggle.

On New Year's Day 1949, Chairman Mao's New Year's message " Carry the Revolution to the End " was published and quickly spread throughout the country. The sentence "We are not only good at destroying an old world, but we will also be good at building a new world" is so inspiring that every small persistence has the meaning of a spark, and the momentum of starting a prairie fire quickly shines.

03 Breaking the situation: Taking orders in times of crisis, peaceful liberation is ahead
Chen Yi, as the mayor of Shanghai who was appointed in times of danger, is the epitome of the vast number of people who participate in the construction of a new world in Shanghai.
In Shanghai at that time, on the one hand, everything was in ruins and the people were in dire straits; on the other hand, there was a false prosperity of singing and dancing. Banning bombardment, reducing damage, stabilizing the economy, stabilizing people's hearts, and ensuring order are a tough battle for those who took over and reconstructed Shanghai.

It is more powerful than artillery fire, but it is also more energy-consuming. In order to get the people out of the situation of "either starving to death or being bombed to death", they were only allowed to succeed and not to fail.

Therefore, Ji Nanyin, a returned economics expert, was sent to Shanghai to help rectify the economy and prepare to replace the silver dollar circulation with RMB. At the same time, Ji Nanyin, as the niece of Liu Changyi, the defender of the Kuomintang who stayed in Shanghai, also volunteered to assist Chen Yi in completing the lobbying work and help complete the peaceful liberation.

Rong Yiren, as an outstanding representative of Shanghai's industry and commerce, could have followed the example of other businessmen and avoided it, but finally decided to stay and shoulder the responsibility of national industry and salvation. Not only did he promise not to delay workers' wages, he also donated food to help resume work and production.

With the joint efforts of everyone, Shanghai's peaceful liberation is accelerating. "Battle for Shanghai" is not about domination by force, but a preparation for "building Shanghai". The road from "Wu An Bang" to "Wen Zhi Guo" is not smooth, but the people who are slowly standing up are becoming stronger bit by bit.
The plot of "Dawn East" is continuing, but the victory has begun to take shape. In the process of leading to the new world, those heroes who sacrificed, persevered, or participated in the construction have always had no regrets and overcome all difficulties. With their determination, we can look forward to the dawn and look forward to the future!
