In the early morning of April 6, 1975, the sleeping Zhang Xueliang was awakened by a burst of rapid phone ringtones. His friend Zhang Qun said to Zhang Xueliang in a heavy tone: "The president has passed away."
At that time, Zhang Xueliang was under house arrest and lived in No. 70, Fuxing 3rd Road, Taipei. Soon after, Soong Mei-ling sent someone to accompany Zhang Xueliang, who was under house arrest, to the mourning hall. In the mourning hall, the sorrow and joy came back low. Zhang Xueliang quietly looked at the body of Chiang Kai-shek lying in the crystal coffin , without saying a word.
Facing this former boss and old friend, Zhang Xueliang looked solemn and thoughtful. The grudges and grudges of the two people for decades emerged in his mind. Now with Chiang Kai-shek's death, this grudge and grudges have been settled. After the condolences, Zhang Xueliang sent a pair of elegy couplet in his personal name, with 16 words written on it:
caring for, and the love is like flesh and blood; political disputes are like hatred.
roughly means that Chiang Kai-shek's care for him was like a brother of flesh and blood. But the two of them were like enemies because of political disputes. The 16-character elegiac couplet
is just right, and it interprets the decades of grudges, love and subtle relationships between Zhang Xueliang and Chiang Kai-shek.
Since the Xi'an Incident, 35-year-old Zhang Xueliang was under house arrest by Chiang Kai-shek for 54 years. Since then, his political life has been completely over and he has lost his personal freedom.
Therefore, he also recalled helplessly in his later years: "My affairs were 36 years old (a year after the Xi'an Incident), and they disappeared from then on. It was really 36 years old, from 21 to 36 years old, this is my life."
And even if Chiang Kai-shek died, Zhang Xueliang did not restore his freedom because of this.
So Zhang Xueliang said at that time that Chiang Kai-shek was very good to him. Was it forced by the situation or the truth?
According to Zhang Xueliang's memories of his later years, he really thought Chiang Kai-shek was good to him. He said that Chiang Kai-shek was very caring about him. He was sick and almost in trouble. Others thought that Zhang Xueliang was about to die. Chiang Kai-shek did not sit down to see his condition worsen. He sent doctors from top hospitals to treat Zhang Xueliang and cure him. After
was sent to Taiwan, Chiang Kai-shek still arranged the best doctor for him, and personally told him to Chen Yi , who was responsible for Taiwan at the time, that he would find the best doctor for Zhang Xueliang.
Zhang Xueliang commented on Chiang Kai-shek's care for him and said "Then he is really concerned about me. He has always cared about me, and I still say so."
And the last four words of Zhang Xueliang's 16-word elegiac couplet, "like hatred", are also quite straightforward and not all compliments.
It is said that when Jiang Jingguo saw it, his face turned pale and his face was not very good-looking, but he didn't say anything.
Look at it this way, although Chiang Kai-shek put him under house arrest, he was indeed good to him. But behind this, it is hard to say if you feel a little sincere.
Because after the Xi'an Incident, Chiang Kai-shek actually wanted to get rid of Zhang Xueliang and Yang Hucheng, and General Yang Hucheng was later killed.
Zhang Xueliang's survival was mainly due to Soong Mei-ling and Song Ziwen promised that Zhang Xueliang had nothing to do and sent Chiang Kai-shek back to Nanjing, and he could go back. Moreover, Zhang Xueliang and Soong Mei-ling have a good relationship, and the two met earlier than Chiang Kai-shek met Soong Mei-ling.
Unexpectedly, after Zhang Xueliang sent Chiang Kai-shek back to Nanjing, he was strictly controlled. Song Ziwen once tried to persuade Chiang Kai-shek, but returned in vain.
Song Ziwen, who was full of anger, angrily scolded Chiang Kai-shek for being a hooligan in Shanghai on the way back, and God would punish him!
However, Soong Mei-ling was Chiang Kai-shek's wife after all, so with her dissuading Chiang Kai-shek, Chiang Kai-shek did not kill Zhang Xueliang.
And in Zhang Xueliang's subsequent house arrest career, Soong Mei-ling also took good care of him.
Maybe Chiang Kai-shek had murderous intention at the beginning, but because Soong Mei-ling did not implement it, he did not have such a strong murderous intention later. He also remembered Zhang Xueliang's support for him and Zhang Xueliang's goodness, so although Zhang Xueliang was placed under house arrest, he was also very caring for Zhang Xueliang. At least he had no worries about food and clothing, and could live decently, rather than being in a very down-and-out life.
plus Zhang Xueliang has a great influence and is an important figure. Therefore, weighing the pros and cons, although he undermined Zhang Xueliang under house arrest, he treated Zhang Xueliang well and did not want Zhang Xueliang to die of illness, so as not to make people think that Zhang Xueliang died inexplicably.
After Chiang Kai-shek's death, Zhang Xueliang was still under house arrest, but was gradually relaxed from control. According to Zhang Xueliang's recollection, Chiang Ching-kuo was very good and very concerned about Zhang Xueliang, just like a friend of his age. Therefore, Zhang Xueliang commented on the relationship between the two and said that "We will say everything."
However, private relationship is private relationship, and Zhang Xueliang is still under house arrest. It was not until 2 years after Jiang Jingguo's death that Zhang Xueliang, who was under house arrest for 54 years, was completely restored in 1990.
Zhang Xueliang lived in Taiwan for another 5 years later. He left Taiwan, China in 1995 and went to Hawaii, the United States to live in overseas Chinese, where he lived for a long time until he died in 2001 at the age of 101.
