At present, Henan Province has 17 prefecture-level cities under its jurisdiction. During the Qing Dynasty, Changyuan County was under the management of Daming Prefecture, Zhili Province, and not under Henan Province. In 1928, Zhili Province was renamed Hebei Province, and Changyuan County continued to be under the jurisdiction of Hebei Province.

Especially in 1938, after the Yellow River embankment was artificially exploded, the rolling Yellow River water formed a large area of yellow flood. Pingyuan Province is composed of five counties north of the Yellow River in Henan Province, the western part of Shandong Province, and the southern part of Hebei Province. The five counties in southern Hebei Province are: Changyuan County, Qingfeng County , Nanle County , Puyang County , and Dongming County .

In 1954, Puyang District was abolished, and most of the counties under its jurisdiction were transferred to the Anyang District for management. As for Changyuan County, it is included in the management of Xinxiang Special Zone, which is the first time that Changyuan County is affiliated with Xinxiang Management.
However, because there are too many districts and counties under the jurisdiction of Xinxiang District, the management is too difficult. In 1955, Changyuan County was transferred to the Anyang Special Zone for management. In 1958, in the new round of zoning changes in Henan Province, the Anyang Special Zone was abolished, and all counties under its jurisdiction, including Changyuan County, were all assigned to the Xinxiang Special Zone. This is the second time that Changyuan County is under the jurisdiction of Xinxiang. At this time, Xinxiang Special Zone had 28 counties and county-level cities under its jurisdiction, and its management scope was very large.
At that time, the areas north of the Yellow River in Henan Province were basically under the management of Xinxiang Special Zone. In the 1950s and 1960s, my country's transportation and communication levels were limited, and it managed more than 20 counties, so it was simply too busy. In all aspects, this level is not reachable at all. Therefore, in 1961, the Anyang Special Zone was reorganized, basically restoring the zoning pattern before 1958. Changyuan County was once again included in the Anyang Special Zone and has basically stabilized.

In 1986, Changyuan County was transferred to Xinxiang management for the third time and began to be affiliated with Xinxiang prefecture-level cities. Since 1952, as of 1986, Changyuan County has been repeatedly contested by Anyang, Puyang and Xinxiang for up to 7 times in more than 30 years. In 1986, it was eventually affiliated with Xinxiang City. Since the 1980s and 1990s, Changyuan City has developed very rapidly. In 2019, Changyuan County was abolished and Changyuan County-level city was established. At present, the total population of Changyuan City exceeds 900,000.
