According to historical records, Nanbaidian and Beibaidian were one village in history, collectively known as Baidian Village. Going back further, Baidian Village was once called Baidian Village. Focun and Baimadian, so where did these two names come from?
Baifo Village
1 The 1995 issue 1 of "Cultural Relics Spring and Autumn" contains that in the early years, there was a Mingqing Temple 200 meters south of Beibaidian Village. There was a vertical white marble statue in the temple named Datong. The white jade Buddha of Zhi Sheng Han has a bun, a long skirt, a mutilated face, missing arms, and a mutilated backlight. The remaining height is 1.64 meters. It stands on a round rosette facing south. The rosette and the statue are integrated. Below it are two-story stone square seats with a height of 0.3 and 0.4 meters. The upper floor is engraved with inscriptions. The front of the lower floor is carved with powerful figures and eight standing Bodhisattvas. There are four Buddhist gods carved on the east and west sides. There are also partial inscriptions on the east, west and north sides. The inscriptions on the two stone bases are incomplete.
Based on the analysis of its intermittent inscriptions and the shape and clothing of the Buddha statue, it is believed to be from the Northern and Southern Dynasties Eastern Wei Dynasty. The local villagers commonly called it "Ji Lai Buddha", so it was named Baifo Village.
Unfortunately, around 2000, the white marble Buddha statue and seat of Datong Zhisheng were stolen.
Baimadian
2 Speaking of another name for Baidian Village, Baimadian, we have to mention the geographical location of Baidian Village. At the beginning of this article, it was mentioned that the Hutuo River changed its flow direction when it entered Beibaidian Village, and then returned to its original flow direction after flowing out of Nanbaidian Village. Next, we will reveal the reasons for the change in the direction of the Hutuo River.
According to legend, for thousands of years after the White Buddha was built in the village, no matter how the floods raged, they would always take a detour when they arrived at Baidian, forming the special north-to-south flow direction of the Hutuo River, protecting the village from floods. .
Is it really this white Buddha that changed the flow of the Hutuo River and protected the village? Of course
is not, this is just a beautiful legend. In fact, the change of direction of the Hutuo River in Baidian is related to the geographical location and soil material of Baidian Village.
South and North Baidian Village are located on Baima Gang in the remaining mountains of Hengshan Mountain, on the east bank of Hutuo River. Due to the distribution of stones in the soil of Baidian Village, which the locals call "slurry mud", the water of the Hutuo River encountered resistance and was unable to pass through, thus changing its flow direction. As a result, a strong river bank was formed nearby, and it eventually developed into the Baimakou Ferry, an important transportation thoroughfare.
Because people surnamed Bai opened a shop here at Baimakou Ferry, it was also called Baima Store or Baifo Store.
It was called Baifo Village because there was a white Buddha in the village, and because there was a family named Bai at the entrance of the village who opened a shop, it was called Baimadian. This is the origin of the names of Baifo Village and Baimadian Village.
As time went by, people collectively referred to Baifo Village or Baimadian as Baidian Village. This name was still used until 1944, when Baidian Village was divided into two administrative villages, which were called Beibaidian and Baidian according to their geographical location. Nanbaidian, this is the origin of the names of Nanbaidian and Northern Baidian villages.
