Huang Ai, male, Han nationality , A native of Changde, Hunan, born in 1897, died on January 17, 1922.
Huang Ai, original name is genuine, number is Jianzhong. Born into a poor peasant family. When he was in high school, he dropped out of school because his family was poor. Later he worked as an apprentice in a company. In 1913, with the help of his second brother who was looking for work abroad, he was admitted to the Mechanical Department of Changsha Hunan Class A Industrial School. After graduation, he worked as a technician in Hunan Electric Lighting Company. In the spring of 1919, he was admitted to Tianjin Zhili Technical School.During this period, actively participated in the "May Fourth" patriotic student movement, and was absorbed into the first group of members of the progressive group " Awakening Society " initiated by Zhou Enlai and others. In October of the same year, as a representative of Tianjin students, he went to Beijing twice to petition, demanding severe punishment for the warlords who suppressed the student movement. When he went to Beijing to petition for the second time, he was arrested and detained for more than a month on the order of Xu Shichang. After his release, he was expelled from school. In January 1920, after being introduced by Li Dazhao, he went to work in Shanghai's "New Youth " magazine. In September of the same year, he returned to Changsha. On November 21, with the support of Mao Zedong, He Shuheng and others, together with Pang Renquan and others, they organized the Hunan Labor Union on Changsha with the purpose of "uniting workers, first for the interests of our class and then for the interests of all mankind". And was elected as the director of the education department and resident officer of the association. Within one year, and Pang Renquan organized more than 20 trade unions in various industries in Changsha, with more than 6,000 members. In April 1921, he was arrested again for launching a strike to take back the public office of Hunan No. 1 Cotton Mill. He went on a hunger strike in prison. In June, people from all walks of life in Changsha supported the rescue and was released. By summarizing the lessons of the failure of the public ownership movement of Hunan No. 1 Cotton Mill and with the influence of Mao Zedong, he gradually overcame the anarchist tendency and turned to Marxism. In late November of the same year, together with Pang Renquan and others, he carried out the The Hunan Provincial Labor Union, which had an anarchist flavor, was reorganized, changing the original "conference system" to a "secretary system" and reducing the original eight offices to three departments. He served as a member of the secretariat and presided over conference affairs. At the end of the same year, he joined the Chinese Socialist Youth League. On December 25, under the direct guidance of the Hunan branch of the Communist Party of China, the Hunan Federation of Students organized a street rally with the participation of more than 10,000 people from the Hunan industry to oppose the Pacific Conference. On the evening of January 16, 1922, while leading the workers of Hunan No. 1 Cotton Mill in a year-end struggle for a raise in wages, he was arrested together with Pang Renquan. He was killed by warlord Zhao Hengti in the early morning of January 17. Before execution, he and Pang Renquan shouted together: "Great bloodshed, great success!" Their death shocked the whole country. The Secretary General of the China Labor Combination Committee called them "China's first martyrs who died for the proletariat ."
