On the evening of March 14, 1937, more than 1,000 soldiers of the westbound detachment led by Li Xiannian and Li Zhuoran set out from Shiwo Mountain, guided by Ergamu, a young man of the Yugu ethnic minority, and crossed the Qilian Mountains. Ergou went to Changgan River and Dacha Ranch, crossed Dongcha Daban, entered Yiniugou in Qinghai Province, and passed through Bazi Dunchuan, Lubuzang and other places to stop the enemy.
When more than
members of the Red West Route Army arrived at Dacha Qingwan in the Qilian Mountains, they held a working committee meeting and organized more than 200 cadres into a cadre detachment to comfort the wounded, collect separated and injured soldiers, and persist in guerrilla action on the spot. They encountered the Soushan horse enemy many times in the Huangtazi Canyon, Baiquanmen, Laohugou, and Guanshan River mouth areas in the Sunan region. Some soldiers were captured or separated during the fierce battles.

More than 900 soldiers finally walked out of the Qilian Mountains from the Dagongcha Pass in Subei County, After the attack on Anxi City and other battles, there were only more than 400 soldiers left.

On May 1, 1937, Xingxingxia who arrived at the junction of Gansu and Xinjiang was transferred to the "New Military Camp" in Xinjiang (Dihua) to learn military knowledge, and was later separated. Returned to Yan'an in batches and rushed to the front line of the Anti-Japanese War.

The remaining soldiers of the Red West Route Army entered the Qilian Mountains on March 12 and left the Qilian Mountains on April 16, which lasted more than 40 days. During this period, they not only fought hard against severe cold, lack of oxygen, and hunger, but also fought to the death with the Kuomintang Ma Bufang troops in the deep mountains and dense forests.
