EU recently approved the Italian government to use recovery funds to invest in the construction of an integrated silicon carbide (SiC) substrate manufacturing plant.
Italy's EuropaToday website reported that STMicroelectronics announced last Wednesday (5th) that it will build a new integrated silicon carbide substrate manufacturing plant in Catania, Sicily. To support customers' growing demand for automotive and industrial silicon carbide components, assist them in moving towards electrification and achieving higher efficiency.
Silicon carbide is commonly known as cartilage. It is the third generation of semiconductor material , and it is also a key material for the production of electric vehicles , charging stations, renewable energy technology, etc.
European Commission Chairman von der Leyen at a digital summit held in Estonia capital Tallinn said that European Commission has now approved the Italian government to allocate 292.5 million euros to the factory, which is the first such project approved by the EU. In fact, the Italian government's funds come from EU recovery funds and are part of Italy's National Recovery and Resilience Plan.
STMicroelectronics said that the Italian government will invest 730 million euros in the next five years, and can directly create about 700 jobs after full construction.
