Zhaoqing College is a public full-time undergraduate university with the right to grant a master's degree, sponsored by Guangdong Provincial People's Government and under the supervision of the Provincial Department of Education. The school was founded in 1970. In March 2000, Xijiang University and Zhaoqing Education College were merged into Zhaoqing College. In October 2021, the school was approved by the State Council Degree Office to become a master's degree awarding institution.
