Times Higher Education (THE) The 2023 World University Ranking Results were released on October 12. 11 mainland universities in China entered the list of the top 200 in the world, and 7 universities entered the top 100 in the world.
In this ranking, Tsinghua University ranked first in Asia and is also the best-performing university in mainland China (16th place). Peking University followed closely, ranking 17th in the world. Nanjing University entered the top 100 for the first time, Fudan University (51st) and Shanghai Jiaotong University (52nd) rose sharply in the rankings, further approaching the top 50 in the world.
This year, 1,799 universities in 104 countries and regions were on the list, an increase of 137 from last year, setting a record high. The UK's Oxford University ranked first for the seventh consecutive year.
On the 2023 list, 95 universities in mainland China are on the list, ranking fourth in the world, second only to the United States (177), Japan (117) and the United Kingdom (103). This year, 13 mainland Chinese universities have been listed on the list for the first time, including Changsha University of Science and Technology (501-600th) which is the highest-ranking new university among mainland Chinese universities this year.
Mainland China's rankings continued to rise overall this year, while the United States' traditional advantage in the world rankings continued to weaken. The number of U.S. universities entering the top 100 continues to decline, from a peak of 43 in 2018 to 34 this year.
Times Higher Education World University Rankings provides a rigorous overview of the quality of the university, covering the university’s teaching environment, international outlook and industry links through analysis of 15.5 million research publications and 121 million citations, as well as analysis of more than 40,000 responses and tens of thousands of additional data points from the annual academic reputation survey. This ranking comprehensively measures the excellence of world-class research universities through 13 independent performance indicators .
Mainland China's ranking continued to rise overall this year, with the total average score increasing from 35.9 three years ago to 41.8, which is related to the evaluation system, thanks to the improvement of research reputation and citations in research publications. Phil Barty, chief knowledge officer of Times Higher Education, said that mainland Chinese universities have exceeded the United States in terms of academic research output, and are also rapidly improving in quality.
