The Beijing News: What was your study experience like?
Li Shuguang: I was born in Xianyang, Shaanxi in 1941. After the end of the Anti-Japanese War, my family moved to Tianjin. At that time, the family conditions were not good, so I went to study wherever the school was cheaper.
Before 1952, I attended private elementary school for three years in some dilapidated school buildings. I remember that the language teacher at that time would call students who could not memorize the text to be punished. My grades have always been low, and I basically get a "big C" in every exam, which is equivalent to just passing. My mother always told me, "I was stupid when I was a kid".
Beijing News: Has the learning environment changed since then?
Li Shuguang: In 1952, the national economy was recovering, and the country was actually changing. An important change is that the original private primary schools have become public schools, so I don’t need money to go to school, and I don’t have to worry about tuition fees anymore. The school environment and teaching quality have also improved, and since then, my academic performance has gradually improved.
Beijing News: What was the difference between campus life in those days and now?
Li Shuguang: My middle school era coincided with the period of socialist transformation, and the school implemented the combination of education and productive labor. Our seventeen- or eighteen-year-old middle school students have to work in factories or construction sites on weekends. For example, digging river channels and sewage sewers, and moving bricks to the construction site as a handyman. What impressed me the most was that I went to a sewing machine factory to work as a caster and smashed iron blocks with an 18-pound sledgehammer. After a day of drying, my body was covered in black sand and my face was black.
Beijing News: Will these labors affect your studies?
Li Shuguang: No, mostly weekend labor. Later, in retrospect, I felt that labor can understand society, strengthen the body, and exercise the spirit of hard work and hard work, which is also a part of learning. Li Shuguang: In the summer of 1960, I took the Tianjin college entrance examination. Here's a little interlude. I was originally a science student, and the school has two places to study in the Soviet Union ( former Soviet Union ), one for science and one for liberal arts.
When the college entrance examination was just over a month away, the principal found me and another classmate with good grades in the science class, and recommended both of us to apply for the preparatory exam for studying in the Soviet Union, but one of them had to apply for the liberal arts exam. Both of us were in the science class. When we were talking, we didn’t say anything for more than ten minutes, and the principal was very embarrassed. Later, I had to give in and choose the liberal arts. I don't like liberal arts, but I also wanted to win the opportunity to study abroad, so I picked up history and geography textbooks and memorized them hard. The result of

Li Shuguang: The exam was very strict at that time. Even the scratch paper was issued by the exam room. I only brought a pen to the exam room. Li Shuguang: Students of that era did not consider whether the school was in a big city or not, whether they could find a good job or not. Later, I was admitted to the Geochemistry major of the University of Science and Technology of China, not the Department of Mechanics I expected. Beijing News: How did you spend your university life?
Li Shuguang: In the 1960s when I went to university, the University of Science and Technology of China was still in Beijing. Before entering school, my family gave me an old suitcase. I took a few sets of clothes and daily necessities, tied the quilt, and got on the train.
At that time, the Chinese University students studied hard after they entered the school. Many of them went from self-study all night to class the next day. When graduating, what everyone thinks about is not to find a job with a good salary, but to think about what they can do for the progress of the discipline they are studying, and whether they can use what they have learned in their major to contribute to the country.

Li Shuguang: My major in geochemistry is an interdisciplinary subject, studying the earth from a chemical perspective. Because earth science is facing the earth, compared with humans, the history of the earth is 4.56 billion years. You can only restore the evolution history of the earth based on the remaining geological traces; in addition, the earth is very large, and you cannot see the deep underground. Something that can only be observed in depth by indirect means. Therefore, there are many unknown areas of earth science, waiting for us to study. And through our research, we can let human beings know and improve their living environment.
In that era, when the employment package was allocated, my intended employment location was filled in the production and scientific research front line in remote areas, but after considering it, the school left me to teach in the Geochemistry Teaching and Research Section of the Department of Modern Chemistry, and also do scientific research. Since 1976, he has taken over national-level scientific research projects and achieved some research results, which is very fulfilling.
Beijing News: You are 80 years old this year, and you still maintain your enthusiasm for scientific research. How did you do it?
Li Shuguang: Counting to the present, I have been working on the university campus for 56 years. Despite being retired, I feel like I can still do something.
