According to reports, Seagate is preparing to bring a cheaper 500GB storage expansion card to the Xbox Series X game console to supplement the current 1TB model priced at $220. The French national blog XboxSquad (via Video Games Chronicle) shared a screenshot of the internal listing of French retailer Micromania, showing that a new Seagate expansion card is about to appear.
According to the screenshot, the 500GB Seagate expansion card for the XboxSeries X console is priced at 154.99 euros (1TB model is 249.99 euros) in Europe, and its launch date is November 14.
The existing 1TB Seagate expansion card uses a new proprietary port on the back of the Xbox Series X game console, which supports the same Xbox speed architecture as the NVMe SSD inside the game console. Games optimized for Xbox Series X consoles can only be launched from the console’s internal hard drive or Seagate expansion card, but the 1TB model may still be too expensive for most players.
In addition to Seagate, it remains to be seen whether other manufacturers will release their own storage expansion cards for the Xbox Series X game console at some point. If Microsoft ’s proprietary plug-and-play technology is indeed easy to use, Sony has taken a different path on its PlayStation 5, allowing players to install M.2 SSDs in game consoles.
