On January 21, 1982, an action movie " Shaolin Temple " by Zhongyuan Film Studio was released in Hong Kong, which made Songshan Shaolin Temple famous. At the same time, it also set off a "martial arts style" in China. In a short time, countless capable people and strangers emerged. Their martial arts were "unfathomable" and they gained fame and success.

At that time, there was a 77-year-old old monk who demonstrated his unique skill " Two-Finger Zen Handstand " in the filming and became an instant hit, making countless admirers want to worship him as their teacher. After that, novels, movies, and TV series based on him appeared one after another, and he became popular at home and abroad.

This popular monk in the 1970s and 1980s was the famous martial artist and Zen master Master Haideng . He passed away in Chengdu on January 10, 1989, at the age of 86. "Both body and reputation are empty, but Chinese merit is spread."

Who is Master Hai Deng?

Master Haideng in his teenage years

In 1902, a poor family in Jiangyou, Sichuan Province ushered in a new life. The father named his son " Fan Jinghe", also known as "无码", so sometimes some people called him Fan Wubing.

Fan Jinghe's father was a poor tailor who could barely make ends meet. His mother died of illness when he was 5 years old. After young Fan Jinghe lost his mother, his uncle often helped him and taught him martial arts when he was 7 years old.

Fan Jinghe was smart and studious since he was a child, and he had a great interest in literature and martial arts. In order to give him a good future, his uncle sent him to a private school. He was often praised by the teacher for his excellent grades.

In 1913, Fan Jinghe's father was beaten to death by local bullies. The 12-year-old boy vowed to avenge his father.

In the autumn of 1916, with the encouragement of his private school teacher and uncle, Fan Jinghe took the unified examination of Mianyang Nanshan Normal School. As the youngest, he won the first place and was successfully admitted to Mianyang Nanshan Normal School.

Fan Jinghe has always ranked first in academic performance during his two years at Mianyang Nanshan Normal School. This child who lost both his parents was very sensible. In order to reduce the financial pressure on his uncle, he helped the teacher correct homework and submit manuscripts to earn living expenses.

After Fan Jinghe graduated with the first place in Mianyang twelve counties, he resigned as a teacher soon after and went to Chengdu to continue his studies. He became a student in the literature department of the School of Liberal Arts of Sichuan Law and Political School (later merged with Sichuan University). After that, he entered the Sichuan Provincial National Police Supervisory School, a public school with the first place in his grades.

Fan Jinghe practiced martial arts while studying. He practiced martial arts in the morning, went to school during the day, and studied poetry at night. As his life gradually stabilized, he also used the medical skills he learned to treat people and practice medicine.

Because Fan Jinghe lived in poverty for a long time, he was malnourished when he was growing up, resulting in a weak constitution. Later, he simply officially changed his name to "fanwuyi" and prayed that he would be safe from disaster.

Worship the eminent monk as his teacher

In 1920, 19-year-old Fan Wubing was eager to avenge his father and searched for famous teachers everywhere. Therefore, he met Wang Tiquan, an instructor of the 28th Army of the Sichuan Army, and became his teacher to learn martial arts.

In 1928, by chance, Fan Wubing met two eminent monks guarding the Shaolin Temple on Wuyue Palace Street in Chengdu. When Shi Zhenxu, who had special skills, performed Shaolin Temple's stunts, Fan Wubing thought that he could learn them, so he followed the master for several days, but the master told him that "the stunts should not be passed on to others."

Fan Wubing heard that this was not easy, so I would just worship the two eminent monks as my teachers. So at the request of the two eminent monks, Fan Wubing lit 32 oil lamps on his chest and offered them to the Buddha. He officially converted to Buddhism and became a disciple of the two eminent monks to learn Shaolin Kung Fu.

Fan Wubing learned a lot of Kung Fu under the guidance of two eminent monks. Later, he followed his master to Huilong Temple and learned Kung Fu from Monk Yunchan and Old Man Danyan, which laid a good foundation for his subsequent martial arts.

When Fan Wubing followed his master back to Songshan Shaolin Temple, he asked Master Master Zhenjun to correct him. However, Master Zhenjun thought that Fan Wubing had a gangster spirit and could not let go of the hatred in his heart. He was afraid that he would go astray, so he was unwilling to give him guidance.

Frustrated by this, Fan Wubing simply left the Shaolin Temple. In 1932, he was admitted to the Chengdu Beijiaochang Officer Education Corps for further study. During this period, Fan Wubing returned to his hometown. After getting rid of the bully who killed his father, the obsession in his heart was finally eliminated.

In the autumn of 1937, Fan Wubing, who was free of worries, wanted to become a disciple of the Buddhist elder of Wuyue Palace. However, the elder Buddha thought that he was too old and could no longer teach his disciples, so he recommended Fan Wubing to become a disciple of Master Zhiguang, the abbot of Zhaojue Temple in Chengdu. He officially became a monk and took the Buddhist name "Haideng".

Master Haideng later served as a Chinese teacher and martial arts teacher at Zhaojue Temple Buddhist Academy, abbot of Qiqushan Temple, Yunjushan Zhenru Zen Temple, Shigong Temple in Wuxian County, and Jile Temple in Guanwu Mountain. He also served as the chairman of the Zizhang County Buddhist Association, a Chinese martial arts professor at Songshan Shaolin Temple, and a martial arts coach at the Shanghai Gymnasium.

Master Haideng is a very important eminent monk in the history of modern Buddhism in my country. He combines Buddhism, martial arts, medicine, and literature. His talent, learning, and virtue are well-known, and he has won the admiration and respect of all walks of life. He has made important contributions to the healthy development of Buddhism in my country and the promotion of Chinese martial arts .

In November 1982, Xiao Dingpei, a disciple of Master Hai Deng, wrote a press release linking Master Hai Deng with the Shaolin Temple. It was later written by a famous writer into "The Biography of Master Hai Deng" and was called the Abbot of Shaolin. This left a foreshadowing for subsequent doubts.

After Master Haideng passed away, he was questioned. What was the hidden secret?

The Questionable Truth of Master Haideng

In 1989, journalist Jing Yongxiang published long reportages ""Haiden Phenomenon"-A God-making Movement in the 1980s" and "The Destruction of the Myth of Master Haiden" in some magazines. This led to dozens of media reprints across the country, and voices questioning the late Master Haideng became rampant.

’s remarks questioning Master Hai Deng mainly focused on his identity and martial arts.

first questioned his identity as the abbot of Shaolin Temple.

Because Master Hai Deng’s disciples and a certain famous writer believed that Master Hai Deng was the abbot of the Shaolin Temple, Master Hai Deng did not stand up to defend himself later. He went to Shaolin seven times and studied under the Shaolin monk Zhenxu. He was also a Shaolin monk, and he was still teaching Shaolin martial arts in the Shaolin Temple at that time.

During a special period at that time, he refused a high-paying job abroad and returned to the Shaolin Temple. In a historical period when everything was in need of improvement, Master Hai Deng only wanted to promote Shaolin martial arts and Shaolin Zen. As for whether he was the presiding officer of the Shaolin Temple, he thought it was not important.

There was no abbot in the Shaolin Temple at that time, and Shi Xingzheng was the head master. He had known Master Hai Deng for many years, and when he saw that Master Hai Deng did not come out to clarify, he issued an order to expel the seven masters and disciples of Hai Deng. Master Hai Deng returned to Sichuan with his disciples.

The second thing that has been questioned is his kung fu.

The main question about Master Hai Deng's Kung Fu is the "Two-finger Zen Handstand", which was also aroused in the past few years and was quite controversial. Let's go see what's going on.

In September 1979, Hong Kong Great Wall Pictures and Emei Film Studio were preparing to co-produce a large-scale news documentary "Sichuan Wonders". The director searched for strange people in Sichuan and accidentally discovered on a forum that Jiangyou had a monk with high martial arts skills, so he invited Master Haideng.

At that time, the director asked Master Hai Deng to perform the "Two Finger Zen" Kung Fu, but the 77-year-old Master Hai Deng refused. However, the director insisted on adding this scene, and then there was a scene of Master Hai Deng performing the "Two Finger Zen" in "Sichuan Wonders".

In April 2001, CCTV's "News Investigation" revealed the truth about the filming of "Two Finger Zen".At that time, Master Hai Deng was old and sick, and his hands were shaking so much that he could not do the "Two-finger Zen" at all. However, for the sake of shooting effect, his feet were tied with cloth straps and hung on the window.

Fan Yinglian, one of the main disciples of Master Haideng, has repeatedly emphasized that Master indeed has the "Two Finger Zen" Kung Fu. Luo Yuanzhen, who was a professor of the History Department of Shanxi University, once said in his posthumous manuscript, " Support the whole body with two fingers and stand upside down for a moment."

is written at the end:

Master Hai Deng was neither greedy for food nor greedy for clothing nor did he love money in his life, but he valued his reputation very much. Master Hai Deng was highly hyped back then. This was naturally due to the times. He also knew that this was an excellent opportunity to promote Shaolin martial arts, so he stepped forward to shoulder the heavy responsibility.

There are gains and losses. Some of the misunderstandings here are just that the master himself understands the deeper Zen principles of Buddhism better than you and I. This is why he did not give any explanation to the outside world. " is empty in body and fame, but spreads Chinese merit " is the best recognition and praise for him.
