Hello everyone! Zen Buddhism emphasizes "not establishing words, but conveying the heart with the heart." Since Sakyamuni preached, he has received many disciples, and Venerable Mahakasyapa "Smiles in Flowers" and becomes the first ancestor of the Xitu Zen Buddhism. Buddha passed on that indescribable thing to Mahakasyapa . After the efforts of dozens of generations of mentors, when Bodhi Bodhi , the fragrance of Zen reached its peak.
When Bodhidharma was young, he had an agreement with his master Bodhitra that he would go to China to spread Zen Buddhism sixty-seven years after his master's death. Because the Indian form had undergone great changes at that time, there was no room for Buddhism to survive. If you don’t find another piece of new land, the Zen bloodline will disappear forever.
The influence of Buddhism is very wide and has a lot of audiences, but its essence is Zen. Bodhidharma In order to preserve this advanced practice technology, he spent several years with his old body and finally successfully crossed the east and began his great Dharma-distribution plan.
Master Bodhidharma is real and has a sharp personality. He doesn't like to make fancy things. Although he has been preaching the Dharma in China for decades, he has not received many disciples, only four people. Huike In order to worship him as his teacher, he cut off his left arm to express his determination, which shows how strict Bodhidharma accepts disciples.
has arrived at the last day of Bodhidharma's life. He had gray hair and had exhausted oil. He summoned his disciples to the front and chose one of them to become his successor and continue to promote Zen Buddhism.
Bodhidharma said to his disciples: "You have followed me for so many years and have made great progress in cultivation. Today, I will tell me what you have realized. If anyone talks the most thoroughly and realizes the true meaning of Buddhism, I will pass on his robe and mantle, and he is the second ancestor of Zen. After I leave, others will follow him to practice."
disciples respectfully faced Bodhidharma, and were extremely frightened, and some were excited. One is the master's departure, the second is this severe assessment, and the third is the position of the second ancestor, which makes people salivate. Who doesn't want it?
At this time, the oldest Taoist deputy spoke first. He said, "Writing can explain the true meaning of Buddhism. You cannot be attached to words, but you cannot give up words. This is a tool that must be used to enlighten the Tao." Bodhidharma said expressionlessly: "You only have my skin."
A female disciple said, "It seems that Qingxi ( Ananda ) saw the Kingdom of Asahi Buddha, and after seeing it, he realized the truth and suddenly realized it. He no longer needed to see it again." Bodhidharma shook his head and said, "What you are in this way." I know more than the Taoist deputy, but I only get my flesh."
The third bandit monk said: "The earth, fire, water and wind are all empty, . I see, ears, nose, smell, tongue and taste, and my body feels not real, but nothing I see exists. . Bodhidharma said a little relieved, "You are very close, but you only get my bones."
These three people failed, and their views were rejected by Bodhidharma, leaving only Huike alone. Can Bodhidharma find a successful successor?
Bodhidharma slowly turned his head, looked at Huike and asked, "Huike, what do you mean?" Huike quickly stood up, walked to Damo with respect, kneeling down, and kept saying nothing, but just kept kneeling down. He had nothing to say, but just kept expressing gratitude to his master.
Looking at Hui Ke's behavior, the other three people looked at each other and were confused. What is this operation? Bodhidharma looked at Huike with a satisfied smile on his face. He said, "That's it! You finally got my essence." The female disciple next to him suddenly realized and added, "Those who know do not speak, and those who speak do not know." After
, Bodhidharma passed on his robe and bowl to Huike, and others possessed him to worship him. Huike officially became the second ancestor of Zen. Bodhidharma gave four volumes of the Lankavatara Sutra and said: "This is the essence of the Buddha, which can help the world to enlighten. If the robe and bowl are passed on to , the Sixth Patriarch , don't pass it on. At that time, the Zen method has already bloomed."
"But many people know, few people practice the Tao, many people explain the reason, and few people understand the truth. You should not underestimate anyone who is lost. Anyone can abandon evil and do good in a single thought." Finally, the message: "I was originally here to spread the Dharma to save my delusion. One flower blooms five leaves, and the result will naturally come."
So the question is, others clearly expressed their experience, and their realm is still quite high. Why didn't they gain the recognition of Bodhidharma? Hui Ke didn't say a word, but just kneeled down and worshiped him and gained the status of the Second Patriarch? Why? Is it enough to have a good attitude?
"Those who know do not speak, those who speak do not know" What does it mean? Hui Ke's behavior is similar to Mahakasyapa, but how do we understand it? Those who don't speak indicate enlightenment? We can go and sort it out, of course it is a one-man word. Friends who don't agree should be regarded as a fun thing.
Laozi said: "The Tao can be told, it is extraordinary; the name can be named, it is extraordinary," The Tao that is said is not the real Tao. This sentence is familiar and we all sounded like a calluse. It actually expresses the poverty of language and words. Once we say something, it will inevitably form binary opposition .
says big, there are small, black, white, and men say women. This is a fragment, which cannot represent Tao. Words are broken, and as long as you say it, it will mislead others. It is indeed difficult to express something that cannot be expressed, but when you want to express it, you can only use language and words. There is no way.
can only say that you can express it as clearly as possible, approach the truth, and understand it naturally. Perhaps most people cannot understand it. This is the current level of human consciousness. This is hard to come by, requires blessings and fate.
Actually, we want to say that after all, Buddhist things come from India. Of course, they have made great contributions to culture, but the origin is not China, so you cannot understand it so down-to-earth. It can be understood from the text level, but you cannot transform it well. Translated things must have some essence lost.
Why? Buddhism is born, you can't all be born, right? That's always just a few people. How to enter the world? It's beneficial to our lives. I think this is the real value. Live this material life in the secular world, and at the same time you have the tranquility of the Buddha's heart.
Confucianism, Buddhism and Taoism is One, the core essence is the same. There is only one truth. If there are many truths, there must be many false. Let’s give a simple example. Let’s talk about what is “Tao”?
According to Confucian , Tao is “impartial”, and its realm is “not happy with things, not sad with oneself.” If you reach this realm, all the problems in our life will be solved. Of course, you may not have reached it. This is very difficult, but if you can get close to this state, your life will definitely be good.
According to Taoist , Tao is the Tai Chi diagram, that whole. Black and white are combined together called Tao, and neither is missing. If you choose one side, black, this is not Tao; if you choose the other side, white, this is not Tao either. Both are at the extreme and a fragment.
What is that? Tao is the whole, that is, the entire Tai Chi diagram, which is impartial and has no discriminatory mind. But isn’t impartiality just a nonsense? It means not saying anything, because if the listener does not realize it, he will not understand it.
If you tell him to choose the left, you know it is an extreme; if you tell him to choose the right, it is an extreme, so you can't say anything. If you say it is impartial, it means you haven't said it, and he still doesn't know how to choose.
If a person is enlightened, he must be flexible and recognizes his own nature. When he chooses the left side, he is also Tao; when he chooses the right side, he is also Tao. Why is this? When we choose one side, it is extreme, and when he chooses one side, it is Tao?
Because when he chose the left, the reality tilted to the right, he balanced with the left; when he chose the right, the reality tilted to the left, he balanced with the right. When reality has no fluctuations, he is in the middle and is impartial.
So it is very subtle and indescribable. A truly enlightened person has a high level of awareness. He changes at any time and reacts in the current situation according to the actual situation. He can always make the best choice. He will not stick to the rules, choose the left, right, or the middle and only uses three-pointers.
The Doctrine of the Mean , Confucius is a person who has enlightened the truth, not a pedantic old stubborn person, we may have misunderstood him. The Three Bonds and Five Constant Virtues promoted by Confucius are similar to the Buddha's precepts, because most people are not interested in enlightenment and becoming gentlemen, so they promulgated disciplines and everyone should abide by the rules first. Otherwise, if everyone is messing around and making everyone feel in danger, then there will be no way to play.
People may not necessarily realize the truth by following the rules, keeping precepts, but those who have realized the truth will definitely abide by the rules because right view has arisen in their hearts.
So when Bodhidharma chose his successor, Hui Ke couldn't say what the true meaning of Buddhism he realized was, because he said it was wrong, the great way was speechless, and he could only experience it himself, so he could just express his gratitude to Master!
may be difficult to describe the whole text, but it is almost like that. Those who can say the first few words may not necessarily realize the truth, but he has some understanding and knows that there is actually a long way to go to live in it. A book of "Tao Te Ching" is within easy reach, but can you make your debut? It's hard to reach the sky.
Thank you for watching! See you next time ~ Thank you ~
